In 2009, Jesus Abrego founded the inaugural Hispanic Family Conference in the Diocese of Beaumont. The event directly addressed the challenges faced by Hispanic Catholic families. Just two years later, conference attendance was so high that the diocese had to rent five separate venues to accommodate the throngs of people. Through his innovative programs, he mentors Hispanics of all ages, forming essential leaders for both the church and the community.

Award presentations will be made Wednesday, April 27, 2016, during the meeting to celebrate other youth activities and programs. Please note that this special recognition is not accompanied by a monetary award or scholarship.

New Feature Added to Beaumont Rotary Centennial Playground
The Downtown Trailblazers, one of several Leadership Southeast Texas (LSET) teams from the Class of 2016, will host the grand opening of their community service project from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26 at the Beaumont Rotary Centennial Playground. The free event is open to the
public and will feature a 4 p.m. ribbon cutting by Beaumont Mayor Becky Ames.
The “Born Learning Trail” promotes learning for young children by focusing on motor skills, creativity and critical thinking skills through an interactive, fun and visually engaging educational experience. Funding for the project was provided by the United Way of Beaumont and North Jefferson County and the Foundation for Southeast Texas.

Ready, Set, Go!
Hear those engines revving? The youngsters have been preparing and they are ready to participate in the Spindletop Rotary Club's Soap Box Derby on May 14 and 15.
Our club helps the Spindletop Club by serving breakfast and lunch for the workers of the event so they can focus on the children, the cars, and the race action!
We are grateful to Gerald Condon for again providing his wonderful cooker and equipment. Shannon Williamson is chairing and recruiting volunteers to serve the food and drinks during the morning and lunch hours on Saturday and Sunday.
The next quarterly service project scheduled will be on Saturday, May 21 at the Buckner FYI Center on the campus of Lamar University where we will do some indoor painting for the students' community center. Cindy Cherry, Chair, will tell us more about it at upcoming meetings but, meanwhile, save the date and make plans to join in the fun.

April 27 will be our Youth Day Celebration when we recognize the Interact Clubs, honor the Youth Service Above Self honorees, and name the two Rotary Scholarship recipients. We will invite all these students, school sponsors and parents to attend the Rotary lunch meeting that day. If you can spare a lunch ticket or two in order for us to graciously accommodate these guests, please donate at the meeting on Wednesday. There will be a donation spot at the lunch line.

BBC Reports:
Vaccine switched in 'milestone' towards ending polio
More than 150 countries have begun switching to a different polio vaccine - an important milestone towards polio eradication, health campaigners say.
The new vaccine will target the two remaining strains of the virus under a switchover 18 months in the planning.
There were just 74 cases of the paralyzing disease in 2015 and there have been 10 so far this year.
All of the cases were in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Africa has been free of polio for more than a year.
Switching the vaccine from one successfully used to fight polio for more than 30 years is a huge logistical exercise.

Doron Bookshtein visited Rotary as an Israeli Diplomat although he humorously stated that he was undiplomatic. At the age of 16, he immigrated to Israel, served in the military and eventually worked his way to the Israeli Special Forces. He came to the U.S and earned a Ph.D. in political science from Harvard.
Doron gave a very interesting speech about the history of Israel and how that history relates to today. From the beginning of time, Israel has almost been impossible to settle. Today, the fight to settle and control its lands continues. Israel is essentially a bridge – it connects Asia to Europe and connects Christianity to Judaism to Islam. There have been 187 different conquests of Israel because of the vast interests in its geography, religious history, economic capacity, and millennial-old arguments.
Most people don’t know that on 5/14/1948 the country of Israel was established by a UN agreement where the land was purchased and accepted by all surrounding nations.
Doron Brookshtein was an outstanding speaker and gave great historical perspectives regarding Israel, its people, and its position in the world.
