PROGRAM PREVIEW
August 22, 2018

"Water-4-Nations: Safe Drinking Water for All"

John Robinson
Founder
Water-4-Nations

In the United States, we are fortunate to have safe drinking water (absence of disease causing organisms and harmful chemicals). Many people around the world die every year because they do not have access to safe drinking water. Water-4-Nations would like to change this.

Water-4-Nation's mission is simple: improve the water quality for those who do not have access to safe drinking water.  By working with missionaries, church groups, community leaders, and other groups, the organization improves water quality and thereby improves the quality of life for many people.

To tell us about Water-4-Nations and its life-saving services, we welcome the founder, John Robinson.  John is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and a Masters in Chemistry. He is currently employed with Evoqua Water Technologies, Municipal Services as District Manager.

Whose team are YOU on?
Membership Team, that is!

That's right!  Rotarians are catching the spirit and recruiting for the team we all belong to - ROTARY!

The Rotary League has four teams being lead by Team Captains Jennifer Burch, Ty Coudrain, Michael Perez, and Laura Winegeart.  The Captains are choosing team names and we will announce those soon, but the challenge is to see which team can recruit the most NEW members to the club from August 1 until June 30, 2019.  (There will likely be a factor for retention in the rules of the game, too, but that is still being determined right now!)

Meanwhile, know that you are being "scouted" and if you haven't yet been asked to join a team, you will be soon.  The ball's already in play!

Club member Joy Walker presented the Rotary Club of Beaumont's trading banner to the President of the Tyler, TX Rotary Club recently.

Upon her return to Beaumont, Joy presented the Tyler banner to Club President, Lynn Castle.

Also, on August 15, visiting Rotarian Nagaraj Shetti, from the Rotary Club of Hubli North in India, visited the club and traded banners with President Lynn.  Dr. Shetti is a visiting Professor at Lamar University for a few months.

PROGRAM REVIEW
August 15, 2018

"This is the Rise of Southeast Texas"

Dean Robinson
Southeast Texas Economic Development District Grant Board
by Diane Bass

Ty Coudrain, owner of Ty Coudrain Aflac Insurance Agency, introduced his friend and mentor – Dean Robinson.  Dean currently serves as president of the SETX Economic Development Administration District Grant Board.  He is a third-generation State Farm Agent and former Mayor of Silsbee.

The SETEDD was created in 1993 and promotes the diversification innovation and industrial growth in our area.  Main focus is to support regional innovation, support local businesses and areas of interest.

An example of a local funding project is the Cherry Engineering Building at Lamar University in Beaumont.  This was a monumental effort.  The application was submitted in only one week to meet the deadline.  Other projects in the works are in response to Hurricane Harvey.  Presently more than $16 million in projects are being considered.

SETEDD Projects are public in nature.  Application windows are generally short, so covered entities are encouraged to do their homework and get their proverbial ducks in a row as early as possible.

REDI is the Regional Economic Development Initiative and is the steering committee of the Southeast Texas Economic Development Foundation.  Check out the video - Rise of Southeast Texas  - on their website www.setedf.org (and on the club website at www.beaumontrotaryclub.org.)  See if you recognize one of our own!

Southeast Texas has many assets, including:
Skilled Labor – Ranks among the highest in the nation
Support for Industry – Diversification of businesses needed for support
Infrastructure – pipelines, highways, railways
Ports – Orange, Beaumont and Port Arthur
Navigation – Water Ways and Railways
Higher Education – Center for Innovation & Commercialization as well as all three LU campuses
Receptive Business Climate – We want these industries

Our area has one-third of the top chemical companies in the world.  We have 24 billion dollars proposed for development projects.  We will not get all of this but there is a good chance that we will get most of them.  There is so much opportunity and the SETEDF encourages more growth in Southeast Texas.

Dean has dedicated his career to giving his time and resources to the economic development of SETX.  We appreciate his insight and his commitment.
