Jackie Becker has recently returned from her Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar year to Lima, Peru. She had amazing adventures and ate globally famous food; but most importantly, Jackie learned life lessons she will not soon forget.
Come hear about how Rotary impacted Jackie’s life and how she is still letting Peru teach her.
Ever wish YOU had the opportunity to ring the opening bell at the meeting?
For a donation of $25 to the Beaumont Rotary Foundation, you will be allowed to do just that. You will be called up to ring the bell to start the meeting.
When he rings the bell to conclude the meeting, President Chad Blanchard will match your donation with another $25 donation to the Beaumont Rotary Foundation!
Rotary Goes to Work has become an anticipated highlight of the year. Rotarians gather in another member's workplace to hear and learn about the business - its mission, purpose, goals and more. Like the early days, it is a chance to develop better friendships and learn of the diverse professions represented in the membership.
"Paul P. Harris, an attorney, wanted to create a professional group with the same friendly spirit he felt in the small towns of his youth. On 23 February 1905, Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. This was the first Rotary club meeting. They decided to call the new club “Rotary” after the practice of rotating meeting locations."

“We had a great time in Beaumont and the cities around it! Not only we saw wonderful things like the Museum at Port Arthur, Shangri-la in Orange, all the team had amazing vocational days! All of us came back with more knowledge in our business area. Loved the multi-club meeting! And the barrier-free for all children Beaumont Rotary Playground Project is fabulous and I will show that in all our clubs in our District, that is for sure! And all the families that hosted us and those who joined us for the day were so kind and careful with us. We can't thank y'all enough!

On Monday, March 31, the City closed the playground in order to perform the demolition of the adjacent Oil City Brass building. Like you, we hoped it would be open for all the children and grandchildren visiting Beaumont during the upcoming holiday weekend but that does not appear to be possible. Reports are that it may remain closed through the end of the month. Watch for announcements.
You still have a few days before it is too late to register to attend the District 5910 Conference in College Station on April 25-27.
The Rotary Club of Beaumont will be hosting the annual event in 2015 at the culmination of District Governor Elect Don Taylor's year. Rotarians who were in attendance at the meeting on April 2 were treated to a performance by Lionel, provided by Centennial President Becky Mason. Lionel sang and danced to the Four Way Test, a specially written song for children about the shared code of ethics.
The animated, adorable creature is sold in a cooperative agreement between the Rotary Club of DeSoto, Texas and District 5810 to benefit Project HANDS UP, an organization dedicated to teaching HIV/AIDS education in Kenya.
Play this video for someone and you'll be singing and dancing too!
Youth Services Day was a huge success at Rotary this year. The high school and college presenters had many activities to tell about and reports of accomplishments to share.
Morgan Stewart is the President of the Kelly HS Interact Club. Her service projects include collecting over 300 t-shirts to send to Nicaragua and organizing a benefit concert to help raise funds for Hamshire-Fannett School District. The concert is cleverly named "Jamshire."
Maret Montanari is the President of the West Brook High School Interact Club. She helped organize a school supply drive for Pietzsch-MacArthur. In addition, club members helped build the Rotary Centennial Playground and participated in Holiday Mail for Heroes, CASA gift exchange during Christmas, Spindletop Rotary Club’s Celebrity Roast, and collected school supplies for a school in Honduras.
Madison Trevino is the President of the Lamar University Rotaract Club and plans to attend the District Conference in Aggieland. Her club has participated in Shred It and Forget It and has adopted a vegetable garden at LU that will supply fresh food to the SETX Food Bank.
Pauline Roudales is our club’s exchange student from France. She spoke of gratitude for our club for hosting her. She was graceful, kind and spoke very highly of Chad and Chelle Blanchard.
Ryan Smith, Chairman of Youth Service Above Self Awards, was proud to recognize the students selected for rendering special service to a community organization, business or non-profit. The student was introduced briefly and presented with a certificate by President Chad Blanchard and the Rotarian who nominated them. They were:
Brandon Cates, nominated by Shawn Pierce,
Jacob Estrada, nominated by Florian Estrada
Scott Oliver Mistrot, nominted by Ed Edson, III
Maret Montanari, nominated by Randall Fluke
Finally, Scholarship Committee Chairman, Allen Lea thanked the committee who helped select the Rotary Scholarships. Each spoke briefly of their plans and expressed appreciation for the support that the scholarship provides.
