Located in Houston, the mission of the Center for Translational Cancer Research is to promote the translation of discoveries in cancer cell biology into interventions of value in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.
Postdoctorate Research Assistant at the Center, Dr. Neal Rasmussen, will come to Beaumont to speak to the Club about his current study of Ras, the most mutated protein in cancer. This protein is a highly desirable drug target in the treatment of various forms of cancer, and Dr. Rasmussen will explain more.
Dr. Rasmussen graduated in Biology from Utah State and completed his Ph.D. in Genetics and Molecular Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We welcome his visit to Beaumont to share information about his research findings and the latest news about treatment of cancers.

District Assembly on Saturday, April 8 to Prepare Leaders for 2017-18 Rotary Year
The members of the Rotary Club of Beaumont Board of Directors for 2017-18 are encouraged to attend the District Assembly being held in Beaumont from 9-12 on Saturday, April 8.
District Governor Rhonda Herrington has scheduled the event in Beaumont to make it convenient for all in this area of the District to attend. Incoming President Tim Sudela is encouraging your attendance as the Board can use this time to begin plans for the upcoming Rotary year.

On April 12, Dr. John Frossard, BISD Superintendent, will speak about the school district's progress and the transition of incoming Board members.
The Tyrrell Historical Library, part of the Beaumont Public Library System, collects and preserves the history of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana, especially that of the Beaumont area. Bill Grace, Branch Manager, will share information about the services provided and the expanding archives of the Tyrrell on April 19.

In recognition of “Youth Service Above Self,” the Rotary Club of Beaumont will recognize and honor students who exemplify a “service above self” attitude on Wednesday, April 26, 2017. These awards are given annually to students who demonstrate exceptional service in their school and community.

The Spindletop Club and the many youth drivers are revving up the engines and getting cars prepared for the annual Soap Box Derby on May 6 and 7!

"It's Spring at the Beautiful Shangri La Botanical Garden and Nature Center!"

Our speaker today was Ron Lewandowski, Director of Shangri La Botanical Garden and Nature Center.
Shangri La, as most of you know, is part of The Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation. The Stark Foundation is a private operating foundation established in 1961 to encourage and assist education and to improve and enrich the quality of life in Southeast Texas.
The Stark Foundation seeks to continue the legacy of its founders through the programs of:
The Stark Museum of Art
The W.H. Stark House
Shangri La Botanical Gardens and Nature Center
Frances Ann Lutcher Theater for the Performing Arts
Miriam Lutcher Stark Contest in Reading and Declamation, a qualified scholarship program for public high school students in Orange County, Texas.
These venues, programs and activities provide the community and region with rich resources and opportunities for study and enjoyment of the arts, history and nature.
Ron stated, "Our objective is to bring folks an appreciation of the beauty of Shangri La. Our gardens are in full-bloom. In addition to that, Shangri La is excited that our musical programs are scheduled, and ready to go, starting April 8th, 2017."
He further stated that the "Branding The American West" exhibition has been rated the 6th best in the country." And don't forget about the beautiful "Eco-Festival Butterfly Release!" Following summer, there will be the Symphony of Shangri La and the Christmas Stroll.
Ron closed by stating, "whether you hunt, fish, or just like to take a walk in the woods...come see us!"
