HMS - HELPING MOTHERS SURVIVE AFTER BIRTH IS COMPLETE

The mission of HMS – Helping Mothers Survive After Birth is Complete is to improve the quality of care the day of childbirth for the women and newborns in Loreto, Peru by equipping birth attendants with the skills needed to save mothers’ lives. HMS is a train-the-trainer program that uses the proven effective learning techniques of simulation, case-based learning, practice and review.  Initial 1 to 2 full day workshop training is followed by low-dose, high-frequency hands-on skills practice and case review.

Loreto is an under-resourced region and covers almost one third of the territory of Peru at over 140,000 square miles and is only accessible by plane or boat. Access to skilled birth attendants is one of the great challenges for the people of the Amazon River basin Loreto carries one of the highest maternal mortality rates in Peru.

Cindy recently returned from a trip to Peru where she participated in the kick-off of the HMS project, spoke to the press about HMS, met with the Rotary Club of Iquitos, and saw other Rotary projects in the region. Our club is sponsoring an international district grant to provide the training materials for HMS.
