SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH ORGANIC AGRICULTURE - KENYA, AFRICA
Oct. 29, 2019
I started out as a CPA with an accounting and tax practice then added financial planning to my services 21 years ago and got the CFP designation. I say I’m a financial planner with a tax strategy. I received a degree in accounting from the University of Oklahoma and a Master in Business Administration from the University of Colorado-Denver. My office is in Lakewood near Hampden and Wadsworth. My presentation is what I learned about organic agriculture on my recent trip to Kenya, Africa. This project was started by a Conifer Rotarian, Carol Carper. The project has grown and is thriving today. Melony will be joined by Suzanne Barkley, a Conifer Rotarian who was also on the trip to Kenya. |

LESSONS LEARNED FROM MAN'S BEST FRIEND
Nov. 05, 2019
Gail Hamilton is a highly acclaimed professional speaker, singer, musician, and author. She shares her message of bravery, empowerment, gratitude, and positivity to audiences nationwide. Born ten weeks premature and weighing a mere 2.5 pounds, Gail Hamilton and her twin brother lived in separate incubators for six weeks with continual 100% pure oxygen. Though her twin was not affected, this high oxygen level damaged Gail’s eyes and left her with partial vision. It was during elementary school that her eyes developed cataracts; decreasing sight to total blindness. Becoming totally blind is when Gail’s imagination and inner vision took flight. During this time of transformation, classical music became the center of her world. Despite personal challenges in her life, in high school Gail discovered her passion for singing and continued her mastery of piano. Gail has taught piano lessons for nearly 40 years! She graduated college with a degree in Voice, and then obtained her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance and Master of Arts degree in Transpersonal Psychology. Gail credits her voice teacher, Margaret Thuenemann, as being the first person she met who viewed her as a singer who happened to be blind, and not as a blind singer. This new perspective intensified her longing to spread her wings. After college Gail moved to Colorado. While the next 25 years would prove to be challenging, through the help of others she began her most meaningful life transformation, “… believing that my desire to fly must be bigger than my fear of falling,” she says. Gail changed from being a victim of her own circumstances to becoming the creator of her destiny. She stopped blaming and started taking responsibility, and aligned totally with faith, attitude, and action. Gail has remained strong and unstoppable. She has contributed to the building of her own Habitat for Humanity house, written and published a memoir, Soaring into Greatness, a Blind Woman’s Vision to Live her Dreams and Fly, and became Ms. Colorado Senior America (2013) and Fourth Runner-Up in the National Ms. Senior America Pageant. Gail is co-author, along with Louise Hay, of Speaking Your Truth, a Woman’s Anthology, Volume Three and Modern Day Miracles. Gail’s professional musical experience includes having sung the leading roles in La Boheme as “Mimi” and in La Traviata as “Violetta.” |

The Rotary Women's Book Club will be meeting Friday, November 15th at Mary Lou Murphy's home (9729 South Johnson Way, Littleton, CO 80127) at 1:30 pm. The book we are discussing is The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. This is an enthralling new historical novel about two women. One was a femaile spy recruited to the real-life Alice Network in German occupied northwestern France during World War I. Most of the agents were women and they were led by a woman whose code name was "Lili". The second woman was an unconventioanal American socialite searchinng for her cousin in 1947. They are brought together in a mesmerizing story of courage and redemption. This group is open to all Rotarians and Rotary partners. If you have any questions about our November meeting , please call Mary Lou (720-473-1273) or LaDonna (303-995-2637). Hope to see you there. Thank you, LaDonna |

IMMIGRATION ISSUES
Dec. 03, 2019
Christine has practiced law for more than 20 years, and in 2013 decided to handle US immigration law matters exclusively. She made this choice because of her own experience with the US immigration system when she and her husband adopted their daughter. During that long process, she endured the same immigration system her clients do today. Christine is a frequent conference speaker on issues relating to immigration law, and is the Chair of the Colorado U Visa Working Group. Christine is a regular guest on Arriba Mi Negocio on Denver’s Radio Luz 1650 AM where she often shares the latest information about US immigration to its Spanish-speaking listeners. Away from work, Christine is an enthusiastic college basketball, college and pro hockey, and pro cycling fan. Christine enjoys running, paddle boarding, SCUBA diving, and, during the winter, snowshoeing. |

Littleton Rotary continues its ongoing partnership with South Suburban Parks & Rec Dist to help make the Holiday Season special for area children and their families. Breakfast With Santa is a Littleton tradition that dates back many years to a time when Littleton Rotary began the Lunch With Santa program focused on needy families and their children who were clients of IFTF (Inter-Faith Task Force), which today is known as Integrated Family Community Services. Today, the happy event is open to all within the Greater Littleton Area. Our Club provides the hands-on help needed in cooking and serving the pancake & sausage breakfast. A few of our members help out in the kitchen, but most help by greeting the children and families, serving the plates of pancakes, and busing the tables. The interaction with members of our community is wonderful and your participation is very much needed. Please register to participate in this fun event. We need you!

IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE AFTER RETIREMENT OR 60 YEARS OLD
Dec. 17, 2019
Our own Littleton Rotary member Gene Dionne is unusually physically active for a 70+ year old, and we have asked him to give a presentation on why and how he accomplishes this. The why will be explained in the context of a commitment made to himself and his spouse when he retired, a little overweight, at age 62 from Lockheed Martin. (Before that Gene was a 26 year Air Force systems acquisition officer.) The how will be demonstrated with charts and photographs/videos from his worldwide adventures plus some on-site demonstrations. Several other members may join him in the demonstrations. This should be an interesting and enjoyable look at how to improve our lives through working more exercise into our regular life, trying to eliminate one of the three preventable causes of premature death and/or reducing physical decline, as well as introducing the concepts of activity groups and "kedging" to motivate us to keep fit. |

BETTER HEALTH BEGINS WITH YOUR DNA
Jan. 14, 2020
My husband Stuart and I immigrated to the USA in January of 1981. We lived in Virginia for 26 year where I worked in corporate America, mainly in the glass industry. I excelled in that field and became the first female sale rep in Virginia, selling sheets of glass, mirror, windshields, storefront metal, as well as helping my smaller glass shop clients add and install shower doors to their inventory, which became very profitable for them. We moved to Colorado in 2007 where I owned several franchises or should I say they owned me for far too many years!! Now I'm giving back to the community by informing and educating them on how their DNA plays a major part in their health. |

AGELESS OUTINGS - ACTIVITIES FOR THOSE WITH DEMENTIA
Jan. 28, 2020
Our speaker today is Mary Archer. Mary created the non-profit program Out and About Colorado in early 2014, which is based in Littleton. Mary and her team care for people who have mild-to-moderate dementia. Most of the families in their program live in Littleton, Highlands Ranch and Centennial. Out & About Colorado strongly believes in the value of group activities, socialization, and being out in the community, in particular for those in the earlier stages of dementia. They take their clients out to dine in restaurants, they have picnics, walk on trails and in parks, play croquet and bocce ball, do service projects, attend lectures and tour museums. In addition they coordinate events for family members, like workshops, dinners, parties and support groups. Mary's work experience has allowed her to serve people during all stages of Alzheimer’s, by providing Recreational Therapy in nursing homes, conducting day trips at an Adult Day Program and as a professional private caregiver through a homecare agency. She has a Certificate in Gerontology from UCLA, and an undergraduate degree in Sociology. Over the years Mary has hosted hundreds of people on outings, and now is the co-author of “Ageless Outings”, a guidebook with over 200 ideas for things to do in the Denver area. |

At 9 AM, volunteers gather at Centennial Lutheran Church to pack bags of groceries containing enough food for six meals including fresh fruit and milk. In just one hour’s time, all bags are packed and ready to be delivered to Centennial Academy. Our current packing schedule includes most Fridays with some Wednesday and Thursday opportunities.

Feb. 14, 2020 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
As in years past, the Libby Bortz Center will have a Valentine's Dance for the residents complete with a live dance band. This will be held on Wednesday, February 14th at 2:00 pm in the main dining room. There will be about 45-50 residents in attendance, mostly women, and some will want to dance. Considering the shortage of resident male dance partners, here's where Littleton Rotary has been a big help. We're asking that several of our male members put on their dancing shoes and volunteer one hour of their time as dance partners for some of the residents. We also need some of our female members to volunteer as well since there are a few male residents who would love the chance to dance with someone new. Those that have done so in the past have really enjoyed the experience. Please sign up for this happy occasion and make someone's Valentine's celebration a memorable one. |

COMMON HOPE
Feb. 18, 2020
Common Hope for over 30 years has partnered with children and families in Guatemala to help children gain a high school diploma and families to break the cycle of poverty through education, health care, housing, and family development. Teresa Bettmann, Outreach and Partnership Manager, was first introduced to Common Hope when her family started sponsoring students in Guatemala over 20 years ago. Teresa began her personal work with Common Hope in 2012 when she moved down to Guatemala and was a Common Hope long-term volunteer, facilitating the youth leadership program for 2.5 years. Since returning to Minnesota in 2015, Teresa has worked at Common Hope’s St. Paul office, discovering her passion for telling the Common Hope story and sharing about the beautiful culture and people of Guatemala. She looks forward to sharing with us about Common Hope’s work to break the cycle of poverty in Guatemala, and how we can Be The Hope for students and families in Guatemala. ROUTE 36: OHIO TO COLORADO - A JOURNEY ALONG AMERICA'S HEARTLAND HIGHWAY
Feb. 18, 2020
Most Coloradans associate Route 36 with the “Denver-Boulder Turnpike.” In fact, Route 36 stretches over 1400 miles from the Appalachian Mountains to Estes Park, Colorado. Before the interstate highways, Route 36 was America’s main connection between the Midwest and the Rockies. Author Allan Ferguson will take us on a photo journey along an historic highway that we can still drive, mostly on peaceful two-lane roadways.

Littleton Rotary volunteers will once again join forces to save and box up the floral displays at the conclusion of the 2020 Garden & Home Show. Those displays will then be distributed to Littleton area assisted living and nursing centers. Were it not for the Club's efforts, all those beautiful displays would be thrown out. Thanks to the vision of the Wheat Ridge Rotary Club several years ago, we would not have learned about this worthwhile effort to bring some Spring Sunshine to the residents of our area retirement/assisted living, and nursing care facilities. Please sign up to take part in this project. Volunteers will have an opportunity to gain free admission to the show after 2:00 PM on Sunday, the day the show closes. |

AGELESS OUTINGS - ACTIVITIES FOR THOSE WITH DEMENTIA
Mar. 03, 2020

JOURNEY TO ZIMBABWE - BRINGING HOPE TO THE ORPHANS
Mar. 10, 2020
Deanna Heyn is a Colorado native who works as a Human Resources consultant to government and non-profit organizations throughout Colorado. About 13 years ago, Deanna was visiting a church in Castle Rock, New Hope Presbyterian, where she heard Ralph and Roberta Pippitt speaking. They were speaking about the work they were doing in Zimbabwe to help local schools and orphans in a rural community north east of the capital City of Harare. Ralph was a long time Rotarian and in the early years of the work in Zimbabwe (late 1990/early 2000), many boreholes were drilled with support of Rotary. Around 2005, the primary focus changed to helping the orphans in the community. Upon hearing Ralph and Roberts’s story, Deanna quickly developed a passion for Zimbabwe and the orphan population that was largely a result of the HIV/Aids epidemic. She first visited Zimbabwe in 2010, and has now been there 5 times, most recently in July 2019. |

NOURISH - ENRICHING THE LIVES OF OUR NEIGHBORS IN NEED
Apr. 14, 2020
Diane has been Executive Director of Nourish Meals on Wheels since February 2013. She has a long history of service and involvement with the organization, including Director of Operations for two years prior to her current position and board member from 2004 – 2010. During her six-year term as a board member, she served as board president and volunteered as a driver and event coordinator. Diane has a BBA and previously served as a Project Manager for Citibank Diners Club. The mission of Nourish Meals on Wheels is to enrich the lives of seniors and homebound adults in South-Metro Denver by providing nutritious meals and services that promote dignity, well-being and independence. For all of Nourish Meals on Wheels’ 50+ years of serving the community, we have had a subsidized facility in which to operate. With little overhead, the capacity to dedicate resources almost exclusively to programming, is testimony to our inspiring growth and successful outreach. Now, we are embracing a new challenge and relocation. But this time, we have made our move to a new, permanent home. Thanks to a generous sponsor, we have been able to renovate and move into the former Las Delicias on South Broadway and Arapahoe Road in Littleton. But now, we need to purchase it. Transforming this former restaurant into a community center for nourishing our senior neighbors, will be the most dynamic campaign in the history of our organization. But there’s one thing we all have in common, and that is that everyone has the potential of becoming a senior. It’s a common thread in all our lives and it brings us together because we see ourselves in the need. It’s also why we’ve had so many individuals, organizations like Rotary, churches and businesses come alongside us in serving older adults. Join with us as Nourish Meals on Wheels and Rotary Club of Littleton come together in our common cause — enriching the lives of our senior neighbors in need.

Can I TRUST You? Can You TRUST Me?
Apr. 28, 2020
Trust is the single most important part of any relationship. Trustworthiness is the single most important quality for your success. In high-trust environments, organizations are 64% more productive and provide 286% higher shareholder returns, employees experience 74% less stress and 76% higher engagement. Trustworthy salespeople can close deals 100% of the time, or sell for 29.6% higher price. Yet our level of trust continues to decline at an alarming rate. Dr. Yoram Solomon will present the 7 laws of trust, 6 components of trust-building, and 5 attitudes that will make you trustworthy, based on his research and military experiences. Dr. Yoram Solomon is the author of The Book of Trust, committed to help companies and individuals build trust, be trusted, and know who to trust. He published 13 books, 22 patents, more than 300 articles, and was one of the creators of Wi-Fi and USB 3.0. He has been named one of the Top 40 Innovation Bloggers and one of the Top 20 Global Thought Leaders on Corporate Culture. Yoram is a professional member of the National Speakers Association, and was a TEDx speaker and host. He is an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist University and Hadassah College in Israel. His trustworthiness model is based on years of original research and service at the IDF 35th Airborne Brigade. |
