Rotarian and owner of Ross Health Care Hank Ross was our speaker. His topic was Changing the cost of Health Care Delivery: Affordable Care Act.

Ross, who has been in health care for 30 years, said most of the information -- about 60 percent -- being disseminated by both sides of the health care reform issue is wrong.

The affordable care act require everyone to have health insurance by 2014.

He gave some of the typical health care costs:

ICU - $4700 a day.

ER -- $1,300 a day.

Skilled care -- $525 a day.

Home health -- $40 a day.

Hospice -- $121 a day.

Primary care -- $200 a day.

In the last six months  of a person's life will spend 60% of the health care dollars spent in a lifetime.

He said 5 percent of medicare and medicaid patients spend 50% of the health care dollars.

Ross said chronic diseases such as congestive heart failure, COPD and diabetes eat up most of the health care dollars.

People with chronic diseases typically will see 13 physicians and have about 50 prescriptions.

He said 34% of people with the chronic illnesses will be re-admitted within 30 days.

He Medicare is moving more to providers having to be more collaborative.

The $716 billion in Medicare cuts being discussed target cuts to the growth of providers and not to beneficiaries.

Ross said Obama would trim the money over 10 years. The Ryan plan protects those over 55 but will changes things for folks who are now under 55.

The meeting adjourned after recitation of the Rotary 4-Way Test.
