Worcester Technical High School
January 28th 2010 Meeting
Mr. Ted Coghlin was gracious to host the Worcester Rotary Club meeting and gave attending members a tour of the Worcester Technical High School.
The club meeting took place in the Board Room dinning hall at the school. President Jay started the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to United States of America and an invocation.
We volunteered Matt Stepanki to collect happy dollars on
behalf of Skip and Frank. He in turn challenged all attended to "fork over" a
happy dollar each to congratulate Kay Bassett for being selected for a
Worcester's Citizens of Year award. 100% complied.
President Jay offered another happy dollar for a successful show at the Worcester DCU center for the Boys Scouts of America.
Our lunch was served by the students along with the well-equipped, well-qualified kitchen staff. Meals were delicious and generously portioned.
Promptly after lunch, Mr. Coghlin gave a personal guided tour to club members.
This year marks the school's 100th anniversary. The Worcester Boys Trade High School was founded by Milton Higgins in 1909. Originally located in Armory Square, it was one of the first trade schools in the state.
Worcester Technical high school modern facility was built and completed at the new location 1 Skyline Drive in August of 2006. It is now part of the Worcester Public School system.
The campus consists of several interconnected buildings via well-thought out hallways, corridors, conference centers and open-space pavilion. It serves about 400 students and hosts to many rewarding and needed vocations from nursing, culinary, IT, automotive, electrical, CAD, robotics to cosmology.
Mr. Coghlin recounted many success stories achieved by students along with the teachers' tireless commitment to help them everyday. Success stories that we don't often hear about in our busy daily lives.
Other success stories, Mr. Coglin pointed out, include the collaborations between the school with the greater community and especially business partners such as Dell, HP, and Toyota among many others.
Many members managed to stay for the entire labyrinthine walking tour. We did not lose anyone in the building that I know of. We all needed the exercise after a hearty meal anyways.
Thank you Mr. Coghlin for all that you have done for the school and the community. We wish you, the students and the school continued success.
