Rotary Rocket, 12 August, 2010 Meeting Notes

Highlights of today's meeting had to be Val Callahan's sterling presentation on her recently completed Group Study Exchange with the Republic of Korea. She led a delegation of four District 7910 Rotarians to Korea and the reciprocal visit of Korean Rotarians to our district. More later.

In other highlights, Jonathan Vo presided for vacationing President Chet Caswell. Bob Johnson led the invocation and Val Callahan, the opening song.

Word received that Matt Stepanski is recovering nicely from his recent stent placement. This news produced many Happy Dollars in Matt's behalf.

Val's presentation on the Korean visit was a beaut. Visuals by Rich Prager and Roger Frost gave life to the narrative and traced the Koreans' visit to manufacturing and other facilities in District 7910. A videotaped account of our delegation's visit to Korea, produced by Rotarian Matt Szechenyi, who teaches cinematography at Boston University, captured much of the color of Korea. He, and two other Rotarians from the District made up the delegation. Combined with Korean musical scoring, it was an entertaining and informative presentation.

Val repeatedly commented about the courtesy and warm welcome of the Korean people, and about the many kindnesses extended by host Rotarians of District 3621. There were many ceremonial gifts exchanged, entertainment by Korean children, and mysterious foods, including a not-so- wonderful sampling of raw octopus! Our delegation's hosts were also very fond of outdoor picnics - - some held on mountain peaks, she said. Being the teacher that she is, Val was also impressed by the children's devotion to learning, their computer competence and their abilities with music. On the flip side of the visit - - to District 7910 - - The Korean delegates were especially impressed by their visit to Worcester's new Technical High School, and the Massachusetts Korean War Memorial in Green Hill Park.

According to Val there is a blog of day to day diary contributed by each team member. If you would like to read please click on this link http://gsesouthkorea2010.blogspot.com. Hundreds of photos are included also. Thanks for representing our Club and our District so well, Val.

Board meeting this week is after our regular meeting @ 1:30 PM at our usual meeting place Maxwell Silverman's Restaurant.

Hope to see you all there.
