Rotary Rocket, Meeting Notes, 22 June, 2010

Big day at Rotary. New officers for 2010-2011 (our 99th year!) installed by our District Governor (himself recently installed). President Chet Caswell presided. Opening song was offered by Val Callahan; the opening invocation, by Gary MacConnell.

Gary gave the Club an update on recent scholarship awards to non traditional students (translate: working adults). He read letters of thanks from the presidents of the three colleges whose students were selected: Becker, Worcester State and Quinsigamond Community.

Big day for Gary. He also won the 50/50 raffle!

District Governor Mike Ellis installed our officers: President, Chet Caswell; Vice President and President-Elect, Brad Wyatt; Secretary, Jonathan Vo; and treasurer, Dr. Lee Bishop.

Governor Mike's comments centered around the service above self dimension of Rotary and our new officers' demonstrated commitment to that quality.

He also recalled growing up in Worcester and the example set by the late Irv Yarock and the influence he had on a young Mike Ellis. Irv, long active in Scouting, was especially kind by providing him with weekly rides to Scout meetings, and by encouraging him to advance in Scouting.

More pleasant duties for our District Governor: the presentation of five Paul Harris Fellow Certificates to George Bernardin, Bengt Hansson, Chet Caswell, Gary MacConnell and Tim McGee.

Congratulations to all as the Club moves closer to our goal of 100 percent Paul Harris Fellows by the Club's 100th anniversary in 2012.

Finally, Governor Mike presented President Chet with the 2010-2011 RI banner which carries Rotary's theme for the new year: "Building Community, Building Continents."
