We are all excited to see how ClubRunner will revolutionize the way we manage our day to day club activities, as well as communicate more effectively.
Welcome to Worcester Rotary!
We are one of the oldest clubs in the Rotary International organization, having been established in March, 1912, and have been in continuous operation since that time. The Worcester Rotary was formed just seven years after the first Rotary Club
was established in Illinois, and it was assigned charter number 51.
Today there are over 32,000 clubs located in 168 countries with over
1.2 million Rotarians.
Today's speaker was Brian Ruttle, a financial planner for the Patriot Group and a happy event led off the meeting as President Chet presented a plaque to Past President John Morello.
Big day at Rotary. New officers for 2010-2011 (our 99th year!) installed by our District Governor (himself recently installed). President Chet Caswell presided. Opening song was offered by Val Callahan; the opening invocation, by Gary MacConnell.

Brad Wyatt discussed the Banley Hefler program, and the great experience he had hosting Ken and Sue Garrod.
The Wyatts took the Garrod's to the Boston Science Museum, the Mansions in Newport, and the Museums in Salem. And, Finally to experience some American Football and Chicken wings at Brew City.
Frank and Elaine Doherty also hosted a Bandley Hefler guest and had a wonderful time. I encourage all members to host sometime in the future. Great time discussing the culture and economics in England versus America.
Finally, Judge Loconto discussed issues facing the judicial system in Massachusetts

I want to thank everyone for making the Business Expo a complete success! We were able to build awareness in the business community with our strong presence at the show, we built credibility with this year’s NICView project and we gathered some strong leads for membership.
The expo was a success because of your support, involvement and presence. We contributed to the basket, signed up to attend to booth duty, printed fliers, delivered our message and had fun doing it! I especially want to thank Dan Vinton for making the booth possible and also the board of directors for approving and providing funds for this very important event.
The winner of our basket was Courtney Feeley Karp of Prince Lobel Tye, LLP, a law firm in Boston.

The Worcester Rotary Club was lucky enough to have member Ed Hall fascinate us with stories about WWII and his missions.

Frank Doherty introduced Elizabeth Folcarelli of You Inc to discuss the efforts made to help children.
Later that day, at the UMassMemorial Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Rotary Club President Frank Doherty presented Dr. Alan Picarillo with a check for $6000.00 to purchase videocams for the incubators so parents can watch their baby in real time. Additonal funds will be coming to purchase a total of 45 cameras from clubs in our area. A special thanks to Elaine Doherty for personally donating funds for a camera.
What a great program to help infants and their family. Look for more NICView update in the future. Thanks to Assistant Governor Roy Balfour for getting the ball rolling!
A warm Rotary welcome to Franklin and Mingi Bodine from Boylston, MA.
Franklin works at Intel designing computer chips, and Mingi homeschools their daughter.
Due to a wonderful benefit from working at Intel - a sabbatical every seven years, the Bodine family recently traveled to the Middle East. They returned with many wonderful pictures and experiences that they shared with Rotary International. Mingi explained how the different religious factions live in peace with commerce in Israel, and Franklin explained the biblical history of Jerusalem, and even the tomb that perhaps was where Jesus arose from the dead.
What an interesting, and insightful PowerPoint presentation that the Bodine's created. They shared so many interesting facts, such as sea level being well above the water, and the historical naming of the Red Sea, to the pictures of the Middle East spices, and how everyone gets along peacefully with commerce as a mutual goal.
Don't forget - the annual Christmas Glug Party will be Dec 13th at The Coral Seafood. Ken Harling sends his regrets, as he'll be having other adult beverages in a secret, undisclosed location near a beach.
Also - Bob Johnson is looking for helpers for the Salvation Army Christmas Meal - Dec 23rd from 4-6PMish. Please see Bob and sign up.

ANNUAL GLUG CHRISTMAS PARTY - Dec 13th 12:15PM - All Rotarians and friends's are invited!
We raised a lot of $ last year for the Club at the Glug party: $1200
At the Dec 6th meeting, Dr. Mark Brenner, a radiologist from St. Vincent Hospital, presented a program describing an expensive hi-tech machine (CyberKnife) that destroys cancer tumors using radiosurgery. Several of his assistants were engaged in a lively conversation with Chris Crowley after the meeting.
Roy Balfour and Bob Mangan spoke of the ongoing fundraising efforts to purchase NICView videocameras for the UMassMemorial NICU, and the "hat was passed" and another $140.00 was raised.

Also - the Rotarians that rang the bell for the Salvation Army at Sam's Club raised over $1000. Funny story during Skip Hall's bell ringing on Saturday, 12/15: His partner, Laurie Savoy, (visiting Rotarian from N.H.) who is also a singer, brought sheet music of Christmas carols and the two of them spent their two hours seranading the shoppers. (Wish we had a picture!).
Instead, I'll toss in a picture of Skip Hall, Bob Johnson, Ken Harling, and Roger Frost ringing the Salvation Army Bells.

Worcester Rotary Club President Frank Dhoerty welcomed Robert Murdock (picture below) of Destination Worcester to address the club.
Club members learned about the city's efforts to promote Worcester as a Destination, as well as Mr. Murdock's success in marathons. (As pointed out by member Chet Caswell)
Membership director Bob Mangan spoke about an upcoming membership meeting, and the success of the NICView project.
Thanks to Frank and Elaine Doherty, Cheryl Marc and her nephew Michael, Tim McGee, and Brad Wyatt for helping to serve 89 people Christmas Dinner at the Salvation Army. It was the largest turnout seen at the Salvation Army in recent years.
The speech will be at the African Museum at 12:00 noon, followed by lunch at 1:00 PM at Via Alto 27 restaurant
It is located in the back of Sunrise Boutique 62 High St. Clinton. Lunch will follow at 1pm. There is parking on the street.house after lunch.
Frank Doherty welcomed Shen Yun, who cave a presentation entitled "Appreciating Shen Yun and Traditional Chinese Culture"

Sadly, Rich was unable to attend, and we have no pictures from the excellent meeting at the African Art Museum with the founder of Nypro, Inc, Gordon Langdon.

We had 14 Rotarians plus guest Jean Bishop attending the January 17th meeting in the African Art Museum in Clinton, which Gordon Langton addressed. Gordon is the founder of Nypro Inc., the largest plastic producer in the world. He has retired from an active role in Nypro and now his primary activity is collecting: African Art for this gallery; Russian Icons in his other museum; and a large collection of Buddhas, which as yet doesn't have a museum home. He thinks his African collection exceeds even the holdings of such great museums as the Metropolitan and the MFA. His Russian Icon collection is the most extensive in the world outside of Russia. Following Gordon's talk, 12 of us had lunch at the Via Alto (High Street) in downtown Clinton.

Today the Worcester Rotary Club had Russian Entreprenurial Women visitors from Royce Anderson and the International Center. The women introduced themselves well, and explained their types of
Gary McConnell told the club about his excellent experience at the Salvation Army serving dinner to the needy.
Bud Lane collected happy dollars, and made some funny jokes about Soviet Rubles and American Dollars.
Roger Frost won the raffle, and donated the money back to the club. Thanks Roger!

Gary P. Richard is the inventor of the EZ-ID License Plate Program. After seeing the news reports on the abductions of two children, he decided to do something about child abduction. Gary also appeared on Shark Tank for another of his inventions, a plastic can-top.

Frank Doherty introduced the speaker, Tom Sturiale, a former co-worker of Frank's from Corning, and previously President of Jamesbury. Tom discussed some of his career history, and some leadership principles.
Val Callahan, along with leading our club in song, wanted to let the club know that currently, our club has $78 per capita donations to The Rotary Foundation under Frank's year as President. We need $1100 more dollars to make it an average of $100 per capita. Once we do that, we move to the head of the cue to qualify for more grants for NIC View and other projects. Right now, District Governor Rich Dietz will match you for up to 200 Rotary Recognition Points for every dollar you contribute up to $200. Also, we will use Rotary Recognition Points to give Kate Moody a Paul Harris Fellow to thank her for her service to our club. Membership Chair Bob Mangan stepped right up and donated $50, and several other club members joined him.

The Worcester Rotary Club was visited by Group Study Exchange from Brazil #4520 as well as Royce Anderson's International Center and his Russian Visitors.
There is NO meeting next week, instead, on Wed morning, May 29th at 7AM, the Club will host a breakfast to show potential new members the benefits of Rotary.

Also, Lee Bishop presented a check to Frank Bednarick, MD, for the Nicview project. It is the check for $1,750.00 from our Service Fund. Frank is a neonatologist, also very involved in this project. He was one of the founders of that department and the longest surviving member of the group.

The High Sheriff of Worcester Country - Lew Evangelidis updated the Worcester Rotary Club on some of the projects his team at the Sheriff's office are working on
- The face Program, to help deter young adults from substance abuse
- The farm program to help current inmates learn work skills, gardening, farming, and also how that food helps others in the community
- The K9 dog that helps detect narcotics and explosives

Frank Doherty presided over his final meeting as President. He was caught bribing President Elect David Frazier, as you can see in the picture below.
Additional, incoming President Satya Mitra gave some introductory comments, and invited everyone to bring friends to the induction of the officers with a ceremony on July 25th

Chet Caswell has done a terrific job lining up speakers, and this week's was Jeanette Sewell of MCPHS (Mass College of Pharmacy and Health Science) to discuss the new optometry school.
The club sang happy birthday to member George Bernardin as well as many happy dollars were given in honor of Matt Stepanski's visit to the club.
Next week, Jen Roy, former TV newscaster, and currently, small business owner in public relations will be addressing the club.

President Satya Mitra introduced our speaker, Jen Roy, former local TV news anchor. She made a dynamic presentation in which she described how she began her new business, "Jen Roy PR." This is a boutique public relations firm that provides a wide range of services from standard PR to video production. She described a number of projects her firm has successfully promoted, one of which played a part in wooing Jet Blue to come to Worcester. President Satya reminded everyone of Worcester Rotary's upcoming special meeting this Thursday July 25, which will begin at 11:30. At this meeting, our new officers will be installed, and the new District Governor, Doug Detweiler, will be our speaker. Among our special guests will be the Mayor of Worcester, Mr. Joseph Petty, and the Worcester City Manager, Mr. Michael O'Brien. We have had a tremendous response, and over 130 people have made reservations so far.

Over 250 Rotarians and Friends showed up to celebrate the induction of the Worcester Rotary Club 2013-2014 officers!
Worcester notables include Frank 'Force of Nature' Carroll, Mayor Joe Petty and his chief of staff Mike Lanava, WTAG's Jordan Levy, WCRN's Hank Stolz and Gary Rosen, Steve 'Tank' Tankinow of the Worcester Boys and Girls Club, and so many others.
District Governor Doug Detweiller spoke about the benefits of Rotary, some of the upcoming projects, and then proceeded to swear in the new officers.

Satya spoke of ideas for club projects, and he will talk to the Board next week before formally introducing these ideas to the Club. He reminded us that we have only 46 weeks left to accomplish our goals. So far, Satya has brought in 18 new members, and he encouraged each club member to bring in at least one new member. There were many happy dollar donations. Rod White was enlisted to collect Happy Dollars because he was the first one to come in wearing shorts. Raul's guest Mayra Panighel was asked to draw the winning raffle ticket.
Our speaker today was Jeffrey Chin, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Massachusetts/Metro West. He has succeeded former Rotarian Ben Ticho, and Jeffrey is a Rotarian himself. He described the services his organization provides for "Littles" who can benefit from guidance, friendship, and mentoring; and Ken Harling, a former "Big" told of the personal gratification one receives from providing this kind of help to a youngster. Jeffery said that 80 to 90% of "Littles" have shown significant improvement in school and other areas of their lives as a result of a match with a volunteer. New volunteers are welcome.
Chet Caswell introduced the speaker, and Katerine Fairbanks of Dirty Girl Trash Removal gave an inspirational talk to the Worcester Rotary Club about overcoming her personal and business struggles.

President Satya Mitra called a club meeting to induct new members and discuss organizational plans for the next 43 weeks of his presidency.
Ed Hall spoke about the whereabouts of many Rotary artifacts.

Jessica Zequeira of Central Mass Walk out of the Dark - an organization to help prevent suicides told personal stories about how suicide has affected her life, and the lives of others.
Finally, Royce Anderson of The International Center introduced Dr. Al-Dalawi from Iraq, and an interesting discussion on life in America versus Iraq ensued.

"President Satya made a number of important announcements: Worcester Business Expo will be on October 2, and we are encouraged to attend. There will be no Club meeting on the following day, Oct. 3.
Our club will be represented at the Columbus Day Parade on Oct. 13, and we will have shirts with the Rotary logo on it.
Oct 18th - Glowball!
On October 26, we will recognize additional new members.
Chet Caswell introduced our speaker Mr. Kaska Yawo, who is the Executive Director of the African Education Program in Worcester. He also is a new member of our club.
Kaska presented a moving program in which he described his experiences as a refugee in Africa. He came to the United States at the age of 20 after escaping from tribal warfare in his home country of Liberia. Many of his relatives were killed, and he struggled for survival, moving from one African country to another. As a result of his experiences, he committed himself to helping children from Africa obtain an education here. There will be a fundraiser for his organization on October 24 at the UMass Medical School."
Satya Mitra announced that next week, our normal meeting is cancelled, and asks members to come to the Business Expo at the DCU center on Wed for lunch instead.
This week - the server for our weekly meetings, Laura Bettis? won the gambling portion of the meeting!
Laura does a terrific job each week!
Bradford Wyatt introduced his friend, and dental missionary Marshall Horowitz.
Marshall gave a wonderful presentation on his trips to Mongolia to volunteer and help pull teeth.
Between the pictures of the outhouse, the dental chair, and the lines for service, I'm glad I was born in America.
At conclusion, Incoming President David Frasier presented Marshall with a Rotary pen.

Worcester Rotary President Satya Mitra introduced former Lt. Governor and President of the Worcester Chamber of Commerce, Tim Murray to address the club.
There was a large number of Rotarians and guests that attended to hear Tim Murray speak about business environment in Worcester
President Satya Mitra also ordered T-Shirts and Golf Shirts for the club, and the upcoming Columbus Day parade
Finally - there is NO Meeting this Thursday, Oct 17th. Instead, please consider attending our glowball event on Friday Evening.

Ms. Angela Bovill from Luteran Social Services is our speaker this week, and then a real 'Treat' on Halloween - City Manager Michael O'Brien
On Oct 22nd, the Worcester Rotary Club had a fabulous and a real good feel experience serving about 300 hungry kids at Kid's Cafe a project run by now a Fellow Rotarian Mr. Steve Tankanow (AKA Tank).
Our enthusiastic club members cooked food from scratch and served the kids at Boys & Girls Club. We contributed for all expenses and felt real good participating in such a noble project. We had quite a few dedicated members who came to participate and help. A real exhibition of the mission "Service above Self".
Thanks to Amy Mosher and Chad Hoover were designated leaders of this project and they both exhibited a terrific leadership role!

Our speaker was new member Angela Bovill, CEO of Lutheran Social Services. She came from the private sector to work at LSS in 2008, and found that most of their programs were government funded, and were focused on the short-term safety and stability of their clients. She felt it was important to enhance the longer-term connection of their clients to the community, and she dedicated herself to accomplishing this goal, in part, by applying the principles of "compassion, integrity, and courage." LSS has 70 programs across New England.
President Satya Mitra welcomed everyone to the meeting today, larger than normal, not just because of the day's speaker, City Manager Mike O'Brien, but because of Satya's efforts to grow the club.

President elect Dave Frasier ran another efficient Worcester Rotary Club meeting on Nov 21st.
First - Congratulations are in order for Rotarian Raul Socha - who just became a US Citizen!
Great to see Raul's energy and zest for serving others. Not just a terrific addition to the Worcester Rotary Club, but to America.
Club Treasurer Bob Mangan announced he is leading the Finance Committee for the Elm Park Bridge Project - please contact Bob if you are interested in helping
Bengt Hansson explained how to make 'Glug', and let everyone know to bring friends to the Annual Worcester Rotary Christmas Party on Dec 12th.
Joe Cox, the Executive Director of the Ecotarium described many of the current projects and initiatives at the Ecotarium.
Rotarian Bob Johnson recalled the Haunted House fundraiser at the Ecotarium from 25 years ago. (I also recall watching my father, Peter Wyatt, scaring the paying visitors that evening as a robot monster).
Obviously, no meeting on Thanksgiving, BUT, several Rotarians and their wives volunteered to serve meals to the hungry at the Salvation Army.

Finally, long time Rotarian and Bob Johnson is organizing volunteers to help ring the bell for the Salvation Army on December 7th, and 14th.
