Jan Luchetti was installed as the new president of the Rotary Club of Weston and Wayland on June 28, succeeding Mark Messina, whose initiatives injected a new vitality and energy into the Rotary Club’s activities over the past year.Messina, reflecting on the theme for his year of “participating with purpose,” was grateful that so many members engaged enthusiastically with the school communities, elected officials, and friends of Rotary to broaden the impact and awareness of the club’s diverse initiatives.

Rotary Rising Youth Leadership Award

The Rotary Rising Youth Leadership Award will recognize one student each month from October through May of each academic year. Any student can be nominated by any member of the school community, including teachers, coaches, administrators, advisors, students or community leaders.  Award winners will be selected based on their leadership potential or experience in keeping with the Rotary motto of “Service above Self.”

In the first year of the Award program, the Rotary Club of Weston and Wayland recognized only sophomores. Starting in September 2018, a student in any high school class may be nominated.
In launching the award, Mark Messina, president of the Rotary Club of Weston and Wayland said, “The monthly award will enable our Rotary Club to support, inspire and recognize sophomores in our year-long effort focusing on leadership and community service in keeping with the Rotary motto of ‘Service above self.’”

Michael Wyner, editor of The Weston/Wayland Town Crier, said, “I agreed instantly that our organization wanted to be a partner in recognizing sophomores who step forward to contribute as leaders because they strengthen our communities now and for the future. These are students to watch, and to follow.”

Each student selected as an award winner also will be invited and encouraged to apply to represent Wayland and Weston at the 2018 Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA), the three-day leadership conference held annually in Massachusetts. Approximately 200 students attend along with 200 volunteers.

Rachel Garofalo, a member of Weston High School’s Class of 2019, attended RYLA in June and wants to return as a mentor to help younger student leaders discover their most effective leadership styles.  “Some people lead most effectively by example,” she said. “I learned that I lead best with words. That has helped me in school and on the soccer team this fall.”

In 2018, the Weston-Wayland Rotary Club sponsored at five students from Weston and five from Wayland, to attend, representing a 250 percent increase from 2017.

The launch of the Awards program was supported strongly by The Village Bank, the Club’s premier partner for the year. Patricia MacNeil, a Rotarian and vice president of who manages the branch on Boston Post Road at the Wayland/ Weston town line said, “These students are such an inspiration. I am excited to meet them and recognize their contributions throughout The Village Bank’s two-year commitment as a sponsor of the Rotary Club and its programs.”

“‘Service above self’ is the motto that attracted me to Rotary,” said John Marchiony, who chairs the Rising Youth Leadership Award initiative. “I believe that more people want to do more community service more often in our communities. These students, whether they are leaders or have shown potential for it, have great energy for engaging their peers, parents and communities. It will be exciting to see what they create this year.”

Mary’s House

Every year for the past 15 years, the Rotary Club of Weston and Wayland has supported Mary’s House with holiday gifts.  Mary’s house is a family shelter that provides temporary housing in central Waltham for up to four months for eight homeless families. Mary’s House has been providing housing and services for more than 30 years.

During this time, families work on issues relevant to homelessness and securing permanent housing with the help of staff and housing advocates. During the holiday season, members of the Weston and Wayland Rotary club purchase holiday gifts for every family member at Mary’s house.  We collect these at our annual holiday party and deliver them to Mary’s house in time for Christmas.

On Sunday April 29, Rotarians attended the Weston fishing derby and handed out saplings to a hearty crew of young anglers and families who braved the weather for a fun day of fishing at the pond behind the high school.

The Rotary Club of Weston and Wayland plans to sponsor 10 students to attend the 2.5 day conference on June 22-24 at Fitchburg State. YTo be considered, the student must complete our simple online application by 3pm on February 28 to indicate your interest and availability to attend.

Jay Messina, Weston Class of 2015 said the RYLA Conference "...was awesome! I had a great time and learned a lot. It’s a life-changing experience. I went back to be a facilitator last year and plan to do so again." His experience inspired his father, Mark, to join Rotary and rise to lead the club as president. There is a lot of information about the conference at http://www.ryla7910.org/.

Please, if you (or your parents) have any questions, contact Mark Messina, president of the Rotary Club of Weston and Wayland. Also, the Guidance Department chair/head at both Weston and Wayland High School can provide you with their perspective as students have attended each year for more than a decade.

We hope you will apply for this unique and valuable Rising Youth Leadership Conference experience.
