A SPECIAL NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT-ELECT, VERA LUCIA DIAS
I, Vera Lucia Dias, the President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Weston & Wayland for the 2024-2025 term, am delighted to share my recent experience attending NEPETS (Northeast Presidents-Elect Training Seminar) over the past week. This event has been an incredible journey of learning and networking. I gained invaluable knowledge and forged meaningful connections with fellow Presidents-Elect, leaving me feeling energized, empowered, and fully supported to lead our club in the upcoming year. Additionally, having the honor of meeting distinguished leaders like the 2024-2025 President-Elect for Rotary International, Stephanie A. Urchick, alongside many other inspiring individuals, has reinforced my commitment to service and collaboration within the Rotary community.
Meryl Glassman from Dignity Matters joined us to tell us about their non-profit organization that collects, purchases, and supplies menstrual products, bras, and underwear to women and girls who are homeless or disadvantaged to help them stay healthy, regain self-confidence, and live with basic dignity.
People commonly associate period poverty with developing countries, but it is a significant, hidden, and local issue in the US and Massachusetts.
In 2022 alone, Dignity Matters distributed almost 3,000,000 items to Massachusetts’ women and girls in need serving over 14,000 women and girls monthly.
Recently, we celebrated nine amazing sophomores from Weston and Wayland High Schools with RYLA awards. We learned about each student's successful leadership activities and how they are helping our community. We asked them how Rotarians could help and encouraged them to think about how they might collaborate on projects with us and other RYLA award winners.
We also honored Cary Gumbert, the parent advisor for the Weston Public Schools robotics program. He is "retiring" from the program after 10 years of volunteering and countless hours of encouragement and success. He was honored by several robotics team student testimonials, by the Weston Public School Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, Dr. Kimo Carter, and by the Rotary Club with a Paul Harris Fellowship and a donation to the robotics team. Congratulations to Cary!!

Children showcase their very own businesses at our one-day market, which is part of the largest entrepreneurship event for kids in North America. Kids develop a brand, create a product or service, build a marketing strategy, and then open for customers at our one-day marketplace.
We all believe entrepreneurs are heroes and role models for the next generation.

In addition to sponsoring the Fishing Derby, the Rotary Club of Weston & Wayland hosts numerous other events throughout the year that raise funds to support humanitarian projects here and internationally. Projects include annual college scholarships for local high schoolers, preparing and providing meals at local soup kitchens, and a five-year project to restore a Weston field for pollinating insects.
