The Rotary Club of Weston and Wayland goes big for Earth Day 2021 by restarting the tradition of giving each first grader in Weston and Wayland a tree seedling for Earth Day. This year the club will also distribute seedlings to each second grader in both towns since the program was canceled last year due to school closings. This brought the count of seedlings distributed this year to 800 and almost 1500 since the inception of this project in 2018.
Mark Messina, Rotary Earth Day Committee Chair said, “We are very fortunate to have such great leadership in our schools. Every principal responded quickly and enthusiastically to our program”. Patty McNeil, Vice President of the Village bank in Wayland and longtime Rotarian was instrumental in securing the funding for this project as part of the Village Bank’s continued community support of Rotary events.
On a beautiful Earth Day Rotarians, friends of Rotary from high school students and business networking contacts gathered to prepare the seedlings for distribution. Everyone worked to get all 800 seedlings prepared for distribution to the Wayland elementary schools of Happy Hollow, Loker and Claypit Hill as well as Weston elementary schools of Country and Woodland. This year residents at Traditions of Wayland will be caring for and then delivering seedlings to the Wayland elementary schools. Wendy Nollman of Traditions said,”This is such a great program. I am so happy to be a Corporate member of Rotary and to bring this opportunity to our residents.”
