The club was recognized for supporting and participating in the Puerto Rico Relief Mission, the Week of Service to U.S. Veterans, and the broad, general impact of the club in the community, earning the Rotary International Presidential Citation for Community Service.

Throughout the year, President Mark Messina advocated for increased engagement and participation in community service activities with an emphasis on school-based projects. His motto throughout his presidency was “Service with purpose.”

“Mark’s leadership in initiating the tree distribution to first-graders and the Rising Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) for sophomores has positioned our Rotary Club for a tremendously productive year,” said President Jan Luchetti. “The club is off to a strong start with service to Bristol Lodge, sponsorship of Interact Clubs in both Weston and Wayland high schools to support the projects that are important to our most recent RYLA participants, the launch of the second year of our Rising Youth Leadership Award, and the 24th Antique and Classic Car Show on Sept. 29.”

Bruce Lee, chairman of the Membership Committee, believes the increase in interest and recent new membership is a reflection of a greater presence in the community. He anticipates great contributions in the coming year because, “already, seven new members have joined the club recently and two more are joining before the end of the month. They became members after attending an event, serving alongside us, or simply jumping in after observing our myriad service initiatives ”

Luchetti added, “To explore what Rotary contributes to Weston and Wayland and learn how members strive to put ‘Service above self,’ you can visit WestonWaylandRotary.com anytime or join us this Thursday, July 26, at the Josiah Smith Tavern. We are inducting two new members and hosting Steve Sager, this year’s district governor, and Karin Gaffney, who just concluded her year as district governor.”

John Marchiony, chairman of the Rising Youth Leadership Awards Committee, said “I’m so glad I attended the District 7910 Awards celebration. The breadth and depth of community service, done locally and globally, is humbling and inspiring. Local Rotary Clubs are working hard to address hunger in our community, opioid addiction, scholarship needs, the eradication of polio, global warming, and youth leadership education. It’s wonderful that there are so many people working so hard to have service be a substantial, meaningful part of their lives on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.”

Patty MacNeil, a club director and manager of the Wayland branch of The Village Bank, agreed, saying, “This is why I’m a Rotarian. Tonight we saw the best positive answers to one of Rotary’s key questions: Is it beneficial to all concerned?”
