THE ROTARY CLUB OF UXBRIDGE

RECOVERS HISTORIC BELL

UXBRIDGE, MA MARCH 31, 2015  Established in June of 1926 the Rotary Club of Uxbridge is fast approaching their 90th anniversary of service to our community.  Last month club president, Joan MacKinnon, received a phone call from a long time Uxbridge resident that she had come across a 90 year old brass bell with the Rotary International insignia on the top and inscribed "Presented to The Rotary Club of Uxbridge from The Rotary Club of Worcester - June 3, 1926".

Frances Palmer has an extensive collection of bells and when her son came across this bell that someone had thrown away, he brought it to her.  When Frances read the inscription on the bell, she decided that rather than keep it in her own collection, the Uxbridge Rotary Club might be happy to receive their lost artifact.  Joan set up a time to meet with Frances and now club members are thrilled to have this important piece of the club's history back to the club!

Historical club records show that the bell was presented by The Rotary Club of Worcester president, James F. Healy, to the first president of the Uxbridge Rotary Club, Albert E. Donald in June of 1926 commemorating kick off of The Rotary Club of Uxbridge.  The bell is a reminder of the club’s heritage and history.

The Rotary Club of Uxbridge is truly an organization that believes in the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self”.  It is the goal of club to lend a hand wherever we see a need, here in the Blackstone Valley and beyond!   Here are a few of the contributions made by the club in recent years.

Helping Families With New Babies:   We purchased Two Webcam Cameras for the UMass Memorial Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to allow families with premature infants to view their babies 24/ 7 over the internet!  Thanks to collaboration with several local Rotary Clubs, the UMass Memorial Neonatal ICU now has a camera for every baby staying in the unit.

Coats for Town Kids:  Each year we purchase and provide new coats and hats to kids in need in the towns of Uxbridge, Northbridge, Douglas, Millville & Blackstone

Scholarships to our Teens and Young Adults:  We award scholarships each year to local students who are graduating from Uxbridge, Douglas and Northbridge High Schools, Whitinsville Christian School, & Blackstone Valley Regional Technical High School.

Funding of Local Hunger and Programs for the Elderly:  We donate to local food pantries, meals for senior citizens at their local center and contribute to the Meals On Wheels Program delivering hot meals to elderly citizens in their home.

Helping the Community:  Last year we sponsored CPR Classes at our local fire department In addition, we sponsored a Week at Summer Camp for local kids in need.

Worldwide Relief:   We are in the process of planning our current international project, “Crutches for Africa”.  soon we will be collecting used crutches, walkers and wheelchairs from the community and shipping them overseas to help those in need.

The Rotary Club meets on Tuesdays at noon.  If you are interested in learning more about Rotary, please stop by and join us at any of our meetings.  For more information please visit our website at www.UxbridgeRotaryClub.org or email us at uxbridgerotary@gmail.com.
