Rotary Youth Service - Developing a New Generation of LeadersRotary International developed five avenues of service for Rotary clubs to use to build relationships, improve lives, and create a better world. Our club uses those avenues of service to establish goals that ensure we are meeting the objectives of Rotary. Those five avenues of service are: Club Service – focused on building strong, thriving clubs through relationships and membership development. Vocational Service – calling on all Rotarians to work with integrity and use their expertise to address the problems and needs of society. Community Service – encouraging Rotarians to improve the quality of life for people in their communities and to service the public interest. International Service – promoting peace and understanding through the global reach of Rotary with international projects, partnerships and volunteer service. Youth Service – empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs. Youth Service is my focus this year and it is a multi-faceted avenue with many opportunities to serve and change lives. Many of the programs of Rotary International focus on youth and developing future leaders and Rotarians. Programs such as Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), Rotary Youth Exchange, New Generations Service Exchange, and Rotary Scholarships. Rotary also has two additional club types that are focused on developing youth; Interact Clubs, which are for youth ages 12-18, and Rotaract Clubs, which are for young adults ages 18-30. Both of these clubs have to be sponsored by a Rotary club like ours. In additional to the RI programs, our Rotary District (5870) has a Vocational Scholarship program and our club has its’ very own local scholarship program, adopted school program and other service projects that benefit organizations in our community who work with youth. Phew! That’s a lot of youth services right! That means there are a lot of opportunities for you to get involved with a program of Rotary that will help develop our next generation of leaders. We need volunteers to help with almost every youth program I mentioned above. There are some programs we aren’t even addressing because we don’t have the manpower. Are you interested in working with the youth in our community to build a better world? If so, I would love to hear from you. Stay tuned. I’ll be bringing you more detailed information on each of our youth programs in future installments of the newsletter. |

Pergola Complete!Well another great Saturday morning this past weekend. If you missed it you lost out! About twelve volunteers showed up at Friends In Crisis to install a pergola on the west side of the building. Here is what was amazing about this event, we had a new member working (first time), along with a new visitor (who is thinking about joining also), Clarence Enochs, who is not a member but has been on several ramp builds and he bought a guest to assist. The good news Enochs is going to be joining Killeen Heights Rotary as well! Folks' laughter filled the air with our very own on site Safety Officer Ken "The Man" Cox directing the crew and letting us know when we screwed up! LOL No really this club leads in giving above self!!!!!!! |

Women in RotaryAs I was involved in preparing next week’s meeting notes I couldn’t help but think what Ken Cox said about diversity in seeking others for our Club! I immediately began to search the internet and see what information was available regarding history of women in the Rotary Club! To my amazement there was plenty of HISTORY. So please if you don’t mind I would like to share a little of what I found!
It is fascinating by the early reasons women were not considered for membership a century ago, the important roles women played and the many contributions they made as non-members, the eventual foresight that led to allowing females to join and the progressive successes resulting from that decision – as evidenced in our own club with several qualified and distinguished ladies serving as President – not to mention the major services they each continue to provide as Past Presidents.
Some of those early objections:
When the Minneapolis Women’s RC began in 1911, its founder, Ida Buell, was granted permission a year later to address the R Convention and asked for support in establishing similar clubs in other cities. But no action was taken. In 1918 the International Board suggested clubs should discourage such organizations from using the name Rotary or Rotarians! Auxiliaries was OK but no reference to R. Next came the Rotary Anns: In 1914 Rotarian Henry Brunier and his wife Ann boarded a special train for the convention. Since Ann was the only woman on the train for most of the trip, the Rotarians began calling her Rotary Ann. Once at the convention, they met Guy and Ann
Gundaker and the 2 Anns began their pursuit of Club recognition which resulted in many Ladies’ committees – usually headed by the wife of the Club’s President. Henry Brunier was Rotary International President in 1923-24 and Guy Bundaker was RIP in 1952-53.
Some Dates to Remember
1987
On 4 May, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Rotary issues a policy statement that any Rotary club in the United States can admit qualified women into membership.
The Rotary Club of Marin Sunrise, California (formerly Larkspur Landing), is chartered on 28 May. It becomes the first club after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to have women as charter members.
1989
At its first meeting after the 1987 U.S. Supreme Court decision, the Council on Legislation votes to eliminate the requirement in the RI Constitution that membership in Rotary clubs be limited to men. Women are welcomed into Rotary clubs around the world.
1990
As of June, there are about 20,200 female Rotarians worldwide. The Rotarian runs a feature on women in Rotary.
Women in the Rotary Club of Killeen Heights (notes from the editor)
The first female Rotarian in our club was Patsy Derr in September of 1988. She went on to be our first female club president (1994-95) AND our district's first female District Governor (2000-01). For those of us lucky to have known Pat, we know that she did NOT want to be mentioned as the "first woman" ANYTHING--she was "just a Rotarian."
Women comprise 26% of our current members! But don't go looking for women who might want to be Rotarians, look for potential members who would make good Rotarians AND happen to be women!

Service Projects Update Our first month of the new Rotary year is now behind us and we are moving quickly towards achieving our goals for the year! A quick update on the Service projects committee…
As you know we completed our first Ramp Project for a Killeen resident in need last month. If you have not read the article written by the Killeen Daily Herald, please take a few minutes to do so—it is a powerful piece that truly shows how we made a difference in Mr. Garcia’s life by a simple gesture and giving a few hours on a Saturday. Please feel free to share the article on social media to let others know what we are doing in the community. This month we are building two ramps on August 27th and look forward to seeing you join us for a few hours and making an impact in someone’s life. If you’re concerned about now knowing how to use a drill or hammer, there are other ways you can participate or you can even come out for the fellowship with great people.
Along with the two ramps being built this month, the Service Projects Committee will be finalizing the DAP Grant, signing an agreement to adopt a road/highway, and will be discussing volunteer efforts with the City of Killeen’s Community Services department. We are looking for ways to continue making an impact in the Killeen Heights area and after meeting with the Community Services department, there are several opportunities to do just that.
If anyone is interested in joining me, I will be attending the City of Killeen’s Nonprofit Network Luncheon on Friday, August 19th from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. The luncheon will be held at the Killeen Community Center located at 2201 E. Veteran’s Memorial Blvd.
I greatly appreciate everyone’s help and support. Service Above Self!

Why it’s important that we keep at the fight until it’s finishedThe good news is that there have only been 19 cases of wild poliovirus paralysis publicly reported this calendar year. But with polio, for every two steps forward there seems to be one back.
In Nigeria, wild poliovirus type one has been detected from Borno state. Virus was isolated from two local government areas of Borno. Both cases are reported as ‘advanced notification’ this week and will be reflected in the official data next week.
It is the first cases of wild poliovirus detected in Nigeria since July 2014. Genetic sequencing of the viruses suggest they are most closely linked to the strain of poliovirus last detected in Nigeria in 2011, indicating the strain has been circulating without detection since that time.
An outbreak response plan is currently being finalized, consisting of three large-scale supplementary immunization activities, the first one beginning within two weeks and subsequent rounds being conducted at short intervals (of between two to three weeks).
This is why RCKH is committed to supporting polio eradication until the job is done.
Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. For as little as $0.60, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life. |
||||||
100 Years: The Rotary FoundationTo a young set of parents in Afghanistan, it was a life-saving immunization for their five-month-old son. To a woman with seven children in Malaysia, it was a loan to start a sewing business that enabled her to feed her children. To North Koreans, it was an ambulance that equipped a hospital to be able to take care of them. To thousands of college students in almost every country on earth, it was the chance to study abroad, with all expenses paid, and learn their educational specialty up close and personal.
Ask anyone who has been touched by The Rotary Foundation what it is and every answer will be different. Ask anyone who has been touched by The Rotary Foundation just how important it is, and every answer will be identical.
|
||||||
History of PolioIn the early 20th century, polio was one of the most feared diseases in industrialized countries, paralysing hundreds of thousands of children every year. Soon after the introduction of effective vaccines in the 1950s and 1960s however, polio was brought under control and practically eliminated as a public health problem in these countries.
It took somewhat longer for polio to be recognized as a major problem in developing countries. Lameness surveys during the 1970s revealed that the disease was also prevalent in developing countries. As a result, during the 1970s routine immunization was introduced worldwide as part of national immunization programmes, helping to control the disease in many developing countries. |

Program UpdateIf you have an idea for a program, speak up! The calendar is filling fast:
Aug. 5 - Nancy Phillips: Women's Storybook Project of Texas
It is an unfortunate fact that Texas has the nation's largest prison population. The unavoidable fallout is women and mothers of young children are a growing portion of the ranks. The problem is close to home with at least 1,600 members of Texas' female prison population housed in Gatesville, alone.
Founded in 2003, speaker Nancy Phillips will outline how the Women's Storybook Project of Texas is attempting to mitigate the repercussions for the children.
With the motto "Turning Pages, Turning Lives," the project builds relationships between incarcerated mothers and their children via recorded readings by the mothers that are then presented by volunteers to the children and their caregivers. The goal is simple: Reassure the children that they have a loving mother despite the separation, maintain the bonding process - and yes, perhaps make one small step to ensure the family's prison cycle is not repeated.
Our speaker's presentation will end with a short, but powerful video showing its impact on the mothers, their children, the caregivers - and the volunteers.
Aug. 12 - KISD Coaches: 2016 Pigskin Preview
The district's four coaches return to the Killeen Heights Rotary Club to offer a preview into what they have in store for this year's district and Highway 190 corridor quest for pigskin triumph!
Aug. 19 - U.S. Rep. Roger Williams, R-Austin: 25th District Congressional Update
Representing Texas District 25 in Washington, Mr. Williams also serves on the House Financial Services Committee, which has jurisdiction over issues pertaining to the economy, the banking system, housing, insurance and securities and exchanges. Additionally, the Committee has jurisdiction over monetary policy, international finance, international monetary organizations and efforts to combat terrorist financing.
Simply put, if you are in banking, have a 401(k) or waded through the mortgage market since 2008, you will have encountered the era of Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Enacted in the wake of the financial and housing meltdown, the measure has led to a whole new world. It doesn't get any closer to home than the roof over your head and the security of the country in which it is housed. Please join us for a truly important congressional update.
Aug. 26 - Maj. Gen. John C Thomson III: First Cavalry Division
The colors will have been cased the previous day and once again the famed First Cavalry is set to deploy to Bagram Airfield in eastern Afghanistan where it will replace the 10th Mountain Division headquarters, which has served as the planning leader for U.S. Forces-Afghanistan since November. The latest First Cavalry deployment is expected to last about 12 months, with the Fort Hood troop presence growing to about 1,500. Maj. Gen. John C. Thomson III, who assumed the division helm in January, will take on the role of U.S. deputy commanding general for support in Afghanistan. The rotation follows an announcement last month by the White House that it will leave 8,400 American troops in Afghanistan, essentially halting its draw down of the 14-year war that the president had pledged to end on his watch.
September program lineup:
Retired Gen. JD Thurman; KISD Superintendent John Craft, Killeen Interim City Manager Ann Farris.

Service Projects: Give Until You Can't Feel Any Better! The concept of giving to others or “Service Above Self” greatly appealed to me as a new member. This is not a new concept as growing up in a military family we were taught to give back to those less fortunate or going through hard times! No finer truth was ever told as it was evident during our first wheel chair ramp build a few weeks ago!
During the construction of the ramp the Killeen Daily Herald was on site writing an article on this project. The reporter was intrigued to learn that the ramp was being built through the efforts of several groups not exclusively related to Rotary!!! This in itself is a rewarding feeling to know many can come together and give back in a great way! As the reporter was finishing her interview she had one last question to ask and that was WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS! Believe it or not the question took me by surprise! I don’t know why but I never gave it much thought as to why we would be working on a Saturday! I responded back saying God has blessed each one of us here today and due to his blessing we MUST give back!
I guess now days there is always a gimmick or alternative reason for being nice or giving someone something for no other reason than it is the right thing to do! But the more I gave it thought we do receive something as I tell my daughter don’t give until it hurts but GIVE UNTIL YOU CAN’T FEEL ANY BETTER! I believe this is the tradition that inspired the founders of ROTARY!
So yes we lived in real time that day “Services Above Self”
Thank You For Your Service!!!

Celebrating the Life of Patsy DerrPast District Governor and beloved Killeen-Heights Rotarian Patsy Derr passed away October 17. She has been a pioneer in Rotary and embodied every facet of the Four Way Test and Service Above Self in her life. Patsy was among the first women admitted to Rotary in 1988. In 1994, Patsy became the 10th President of our club, the first woman to hold this position. In 2000, Patsy became the 86th Governor of District 5870. Patsy's community contributions extend far beyond Rotary and will not be forgotten. We will honor her memory by our thoughts and actions, including continued support to the good works of the Rotary Foundation. |

Political Season is Upon Us
It is that time of year when all of the political advertisements start springing up. Our local papers are also filled with all sorts of political news. Having open forums to advertise candidates and to discuss political issues is necessary and one of the foundations of our great nation. Rotarians are traditionally involved in politics due to our involvement in the community and status as leaders. So, there is that temptation to allow politics to slip into Rotary meetings, events and programs. It can be as simple as expressing an opinion about current affairs, or openly suggesting we vote for a particular candidate.

And of course, our District Governor Rich Kaye was the mastermind behind it all! |

New Rules for Attendance
Thank you Stan Passman for pointing out the fact I omitted the most important fact that make-ups are only good for fourteen (14) days immediately prior to or after the missed meeting. In other words, you can do a make-up 2 weeks before a meeting date you know you are going to miss or you simply have 2 weeks after the missed meeting to get the make-up completed.

Engage Rotary, Change LivesI think our focus this year is fitting--"Engage Rotary, Change Lives." In the coming weeks you will see some of our priorities fall in place, but for the sake of brevity it comes down to two items that are at the core of being a Rotarian: membership retention/recruitment and the Rotary Foundation. |

Basic Education and Literacy
I was sitting at my computer last night and I happened across the story of an American Rotary club that was working with a sister club in Sri Lanka to help rebuild schools that had been literally wiped out by the great tsunami a couple years ago and thinking what a nice project that must be, how worthwhile, how its right in line with Area of Focus Four for Rotary International (Basic Education and Literacy).

Great East Japan Earthquake
On March 11, 2011, Japan was struck by the most powerful earthquake to hit the island nation in recorded history. The 8.9-magnitude temblor, which was centered near the east coast of Japan, killed hundreds of people, caused a tsunami that unleashed 30-foot walls of water that swept across rice fields, engulfed entire towns, dragged houses onto highways, and tossed cars and boats like toys. Some waves reached six miles (10 kilometers) inland in Miyagi Prefecture on Japan's east coast.

PolioPlus
I was reading the stats on our fight against polio the other day and I started wondering why we call it PolioPlus. I honestly thought it referred to the way we were stressing the eradication effort, and that it meant we needed to do more (hence the "plus") as we continued the fight. Wrong!!!

India on course to be declared polio free
As of today, India has now been free of new cases of polio for a year, putting it on track to end its status as a country where the virus is endemic. In a few weeks, if pending samples test negative for the virus, India will be officially regarded as free from polio for the first time in its history.

January is Rotary Awareness Month
The month of January is set aside as Rotary Awareness Month with a goal of refreshing ourselves and our club when it comes to the purpose and the message of Rotary. First and foremost, as we go through this month, our purpose as both individuals and as an organization should be clear; our motto sums it up - "Service Above Self".

New Generations Month
During the month of November, Rotary International will focus attention on the next generation of Rotarians…those (hopefully) coming behind us to carry on the incredible work of Rotary. This new generation, Generation Y as it's being called, has some distinct traits that we might not be aware of or understand and yet, failure to grasp the essence of this new generation could cost us in seeing Rotary continue as a viable force.

Veterans Day 2011
In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."

Ever wonder why the Rotary year begins 1 July?
The international convention initially played a key role in determining the start date of our fiscal and administrative year. Rotary's first fiscal year began the day after the first convention ended, on 18 August 1910. The 1911-12 fiscal year also related to the convention, beginning with the first day of the 1911 convention on 21 August.

Vocational Service Month - Part 2
Rotary, as part of Future Visions, has fielded a program to help in world-wide development. The new program (really not so new now) is Vocational Training Teams. Clubs and Districts are putting together grant requests that will allow them to field teams locally, nationally or internationally focused on developing a better understanding of a specific profession, or actually assisting in the professional development of a specific group of professionals in a community.

Rotary - the best hope!!!
The next time you're out surfing the net (and don't try and pretend you don't do it - we ALL are out there from time to time) take a minute and Google "Rotary at Work". Oh my heavens...I got 51 million hits, and while I know there aren't that many clubs, and there were a few duplicates, I went through the first 15 or 20 pages and was absolutely fascinated by what Rotary is doing in the world. Now, last week I covered how we can each make a difference through our service.

Did You Know?
Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee says it is possible to stamp out Polio by the end of 2012 if the governments of just a few more countries beef up their efforts as demonstrated by Nigeria and India.
New cases of polio reported this year (334) are down 46% from the same time last year. One third (111) of all Polio cases reported have occurred in endemic countries and two thirds (223) in non-endemic. Over one half (175) of all cases have come from just two countries: Chad and the the Democratic Republic of the Congo. |

Rotary in Action
My last article dealt with the criticality of our foundation in accomplishing the Rotary areas of focus and, believe me, it is more than just critical, but there is one resource even more important than the Foundation-and that is the vision and determination of Rotarians to serve their fellow man and to make the world a MUCH better place to live!!!

Rotary's Foundation and its support

Rotary 101-How Rotary is Organized
We all know about Rotary Clubs, each of us is a member of one. The club is the basic building block of Rotary International; it's where the real work of Rotary is accomplished. There some 33,000 Rotary Clubs in 200 countries and geographical areas.

Rotary's Areas of Focus
Last week I chatted a bit about the International Service opportunities that are out there and why, to Rotary, that is so important. I wanted to take some time this week to highlight the areas of focus that currently have the attention of the world's foremost service organization (that's us in Rotary, by the way) and what we're doing to move forward in such vital areas!!

International Service
Rotary is a world-wide presence and this global reach has opened our final lane of service and that's International Service. International service is the effort on the part of Rotary clubs everywhere to expand the club's humanitarian reach around the world, and just as important, to promote world understanding and peace. The actual focus can be as broad as everything a club does in the fight to eradicate polio, down to the specifics of how to help Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries, and the cultures they'll encounter.
|
||||||
Community Service
As a Rotary club we have two things that should concern us each and every day. The first, promoting high ethical standards in our various professions, as well as the rest of the business community. The second is serving our community and those in need, our community being both local and international.
|
||||||
Vocational Service
Last week we talked about Club Service and the opportunities just being in a fellowship such as ours presents for service to our community and the wider world. The second avenue of service we have as members of Rotary is Vocational Service.
|
||||||
Club Service
In my last note, I talked about the four service lanes and what they mean to Rotary and should mean to our club. What I'd like to do over the next few weeks is take a closer look at the four, and explore them a bit to see how they do impact our club. The first, you'll remember, was Club Service.

What is the Big Deal about Attendance?

The Meaning of Family
December is Family of Rotary Month. Rotary "Family" includes not only the individual member, but also the clubs, organizations, programs, and beneficiaries of Rotary endeavors. The Family of Rotary also includes our own families, those loved ones that live in our homes, visit at Christmas, and bring home stray dogs to adopt.

Rotary's Global Impact
The most recent information from Rotary International tells us there are over 33,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries. There are over 1.2 million Rotarians throughout the world. Needless to say, there are a lot of us that wear the Rotary lapel pin. This month, we have been discussing at length the great work of The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary's Foundation
As we continue to recognize Rotary Foundation Month, I want to share with you some additional information about the works of the Foundation. Thanksgiving
This month being November, I pondered over the things I have to be thankful for. Our Members Are Our Most Valuable Asset
This Friday while you are at the meeting, I would like for you to look to your left – then to your right – and think to yourself who is missing. Then, you may ask yourself, Why?.
