Charter Members
In 1985, members of the Rotary Club of Killeen decided to sponsor a second club in the area. Rotarians Dan Bray, Colin "Ick" Hook, Bruce Kilpatrick, Bill McKinney, Mike Pinson, and Howard Watson, along with many others in the Killeen Club, worked diligently to get the new club organized and "off the ground." On June 21, 1985, Bruce Kilpatrick and Dennis DeWine signed the Application for Membership in Rotary International certifying that it meets the constitutional requirements for membership.
With the help of District 587 Governor John K. "Ken" Braselton and his wife Juanita (Rotary Club of Northwest Austin), the club was born and christened The Rotary Club of Killeen Heights during Charter Night festivities held at the Fort Hood Officers' Club on July 27, 1985. The name Killeen Heights was chosen because it was recognized that most members would reside or work in the cities of Killeen and Harker Heights. With PDG Ick Hook and President Ben Wickersham of the Rotary Club of Killeen officiating at the banquet, PDG Virgil Waggoner presented the charter to the club.
Distinguished guests at the chartering included PRID R.J. "Jack" Forrest (Rotary Club of Mexia), PDG Virgil and Frances Waggoner (Rotary Club of South Austin), PDG Sam and Margaret Gardner (Rotary Club of Northwest Waco), PDG Jack and Doris Russell (Rotary Club of Clifton), DGN Bobby Parker (Rotary Club of Belton), and Dr. Harry and Mary Ann Macey (Rotary Club of Temple).
