    THANK YOU

    FOR BEING AT ROTARY TODAY!!!

TODAY WE CELEBRATE!!
On this day in Rotary history, a powerful barrier was broken—and the ripple effects are still shaping our clubs today.
In 1987, Sylvia Whitlock became president of the Rotary Club of Duarte, making her the first woman to hold such a position within Rotary International. But this milestone didn’t come easily.
Nearly a decade earlier, the Duarte club had its charter revoked for doing something bold—welcoming women into membership. Rather than backing down, they stood firm in their belief that service knows no gender. Their courage led to a landmark legal battle, culminating in the historic Board of Directors, Rotary International v. Rotary Club of Duarte.
On May 4, 1987, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the decision that Rotary clubs are subject to anti-discrimination laws, affirming that women must be allowed to join. With that ruling, Rotary International officially opened its doors to women around the world.
Today, we celebrate more than a court decision—we celebrate courage, conviction, and the unwavering belief in inclusion. Because of leaders like Sylvia Whitlock and the Duarte club, Rotary is stronger, more diverse, and more impactful.
At South Tyler Rotary, we honor this legacy by continuing to create space for all voices, all leaders, and all who are called to serve.
