Dear Rotarians,
September is Basic Education and Literacy Month, one of Rotary’s key areas of focus. Around the world, Rotary is tackling barriers that prevent children and adults from reaching their full potential—whether it’s providing school supplies, training teachers, or supporting adult literacy programs. The goal is simple but powerful: when people can read, write, and learn, they can build brighter futures for themselves, their families, and their communities. Together, we aim to change lives for the 1 in 6 adults around the world who cannot read.
Here at South Tyler Rotary, we have the privilege of being part of that global story, and also the responsibility to ask: how can we make an impact right here in East Texas? Whether it’s supporting local schools, mentoring young readers, or collecting books for classrooms and libraries, opportunities abound to connect Rotary’s mission to the needs of our community. This month, we are collecting books for PAVE East Texas. They have a big need for children's books right now.
As Rotarians, we know that education is not just about learning facts—it’s about opening doors. Literacy empowers people to find jobs, break cycles of poverty, and discover their potential. Every act of service in this area—big or small—plants a seed of hope for future generations.
Let’s reflect on the gift of education in our own lives and commit to helping others share in that same gift. Together, we can make literacy not just a focus for September, but a legacy for South Tyler Rotary.
Yours in service,
Alex
