🌞 Service with a Splash: Summer Ideas for Rotarians & Their Families to Give Back

As summer heats up, so does the opportunity to serve! Whether you’re hitting the road or staying local, the season is the perfect time for Rotarians and their families to come together and give back in meaningful ways. Service doesn’t stop when the school year ends—it just gets more creative!

Here are some fun and impactful summer service ideas to inspire your family to live Rotary’s motto: Service Above Self:

🌳 1. Host a Family-Friendly Cleanup Day

Pick a park, trail, or neighborhood spot that needs a little love. Invite fellow club members and families for a morning of trash pickup, gardening, or beautification. Bring snacks, music, and make it a party with a purpose!

🥫 2. Organize a Summer Food Drive

Hunger doesn’t take a vacation. Partner with a local food bank or shelter to collect non-perishable items. Set up collection bins at summer events, your office, or even your front yard with a sign inviting neighbors to join the effort.

📚 3. Read Aloud at Libraries or Camps

Help prevent the “summer slide” by volunteering to read to children at local libraries, summer programs, or shelters. You can even create a “Rotary Reading Day” with themed books and activities.

🧓 4. Visit a Senior Center

Bring some sunshine to local senior homes through games, music, or just a friendly conversation. Involve your children—seniors love young visitors, and it teaches compassion across generations.

🐾 5. Support Animal Shelters

Collect supplies like pet food, towels, or toys for your local shelter—or spend a day walking dogs or playing with kittens. It’s an easy way to give back and spread kindness (plus, who doesn’t love puppies?).

💧 6. Spread Kindness on the Go

Going on vacation? Take “Service Above Self” with you! Pack extra toiletries for shelters, pick up litter on a hike, or buy a meal for someone in need on your travels. Small acts add up—no matter where you are.

🛠️ 7. Plan a Mini Project with Your Club

Whether it’s assembling hygiene kits, packing backpacks for students, or hosting a lemonade stand to raise money for PolioPlus, summer is a great time for Rotarians and their kids to create and lead their own micro-service projects.

Summer is more than fun in the sun—it’s a season of opportunity. Let’s make it one of action, connection, and impact. When families serve together, we plant the seeds for a lifetime of compassion and leadership.

Guest Speaker, Zach Sabota
Commissioner, Precinct 2 – Smith County Historical Commission

Zach Sabota serves as the Precinct 2 appointee to the newly established Smith County Historical Commission. His appointment by Commissioner John Moore came shortly after the commission’s formation by the Smith County Commissioners Court on January 21, 2025.

Designed to advise the county and support the Texas Historical Commission in documenting, promoting, and preserving local heritage, the commission also oversees the state’s historical marker program.

Before this role, Zach dedicated eight years to the City of Tyler Historic Preservation Board, including seven years as Chair, demonstrating a sustained commitment to safeguarding Tyler’s architectural and cultural legacy.

He is also an active contributor to Historic Tyler and the Smith County Historical Society, expanding his influence and advocacy across multiple preservation initiatives.

Zach’s leadership credentials are built on deep local roots and a collaborative ethos—key assets for the Commission’s goals. His contributions continue to strengthen efforts to identify and celebrate the county’s historic structures, archaeological sites, and heritage narratives.

Francesco Arezzo of Italy selected to be 2025-26 Rotary International President

Francesco Arezzo, a member of the Rotary Club of Ragusa, Italy, has been selected by the Board of Directors to become Rotary International’s president for 2025-26. Arezzo will become president on 1 July.

The Board conducted a special session following the unexpected resignation of RI President-elect Mário César Martins de Camargo on 8 June. Guided by the RI code and policies, the Board selected the new president-elect from a pool of candidates who were considered by the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in August 2023.

The 2025-26 presidential message, announced at the 2025 Rotary International Assembly in February, will remain Unite for Good, which calls on Rotary members to be a force for unity in a world increasingly divided by politics, geography, and ideology. Through service projects, Rotary brings together people of every background — across races, religions, and professions — in a shared mission to do good in their communities.

Arezzo is an orthodontist in private practice. He is active internationally as a member of the Italian, European, and American orthodontics associations. He is vice president of the National Association of Italian Dentists for the province of Ragusa and was the founder and head for seven years of the delegation for Ragusa of the National Trust for Italy. He is a Knight of Honor and Devotion in Obedience within the Sovereign Order of Malta.

A Rotary member for more than 30 years, Arezzo has served as vice chair of the Joint Strategic Planning Committee and as RI director, learning facilitator, and as district conference presidential representative.

Arezzo is a Major Donor and Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation. He is married to Anna Maria Criscione, an entrepreneur in the tourism field. They have two children.
