Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Each January, we pause to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a leader whose words and actions continue to inspire service, courage, and unity. Dr. King believed that meaningful change begins when individuals choose to serve something greater than themselves—a principle Rotarians know well as Service Above Self.
Dr. King reminded us that service is not about recognition, but about impact:
“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve.”
His vision of service was rooted in compassion, humility, and a commitment to lifting others—values that align closely with Rotary’s mission to improve lives locally and globally.
He also challenged us to act with integrity and purpose in all that we do:
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?"
As Rotarians, we answer that question through service projects, community partnerships, and our dedication to making a difference—one act of service at a time.
Dr. King believed in unity through action:
“We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.”
May his words encourage us to continue serving with open hearts, strong convictions, and a shared commitment to building a better, more compassionate world.

Wonder what our District Governor-Elect, Diane Kavanaugh has been up to?
Our District Governor-Elect, Diane Kavanaugh, and her husband, Jonathan—both proud South Tyler Rotarians—recently traveled to Orlando, Florida to attend Rotary International’s International Training Assembly.
This annual global learning event brings together incoming district governors from around the world to share ideas, gain inspiration, and prepare to strengthen clubs and create meaningful impact in their communities. From keynote speakers and breakout sessions to networking opportunities and the vibrant House of Friendship, the experience truly reflects the internationality of Rotary.
Jonathan also participated in the Governor-Elect Partner Program, which recognizes the important role partners play during a governor’s year of service. The program offered connection, learning, and support as they prepare for the exciting year ahead.
We are proud of Diane and Jonathan and grateful for their commitment to leadership, service, and Rotary’s mission of Service Above Self.
