Basic Education and Literacy
Basic education and literacy is one of The Rotary Foundation’s six areas of focus. We know that basic education and literacy are essential for reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace.
In East Texas, 61% of adults read below an eighth grade level. So, while they may have some reading skills, those skills are not strong enough for them to successfully participate in a community college, an university or even vocational training such as welding, auto technician or certified nurse’s aide. Literacy Council of Tyler, addresses this issue every day serving (sans a pandemic) 1,900 students per year.
One portion of LCOT's program is to promote reading to children. However, this is very difficult to do if families do not have books at home. Believe, me there are hundreds and hundreds of families in Tyler who have no books or few books in their homes. Therefore, throughout the year, LCOT, gives books to families in need. I assure you these books are highly appreciated.
