We are off to another great year at South Tyler Rotary! A special thanks to our extended and new STR Board of Directors - thank you for stepping up and working to make our club stronger, better, and even bigger!
This last month, STR participated in the reopening of SPLASHER. Through the combined efforts of Tyler's Rotary clubs, we are proud to be a part of this revitalization project. SPLASHER is a long-time favorite destination for family fun and community fellowship in Tyler, and our dedication to SPLASHER demonstrates that STR members are great examples of community servants! Rotary is all about SERVICE!
We have added GREETERS to our weekly meetings; help our GREETERS by extending a warm welcome to all visitors ... sit at a different table, welcome others to join you for lunch, and be a Rotary friend.
Lastly, we have a group working on networking/social events for our club. In the near future, more information will be provided on activities that will complement our service areas (AND be fun!).
Thank you for all you do for STR and the greater Tyler Community,
Jeff W. Johnston
President
South Tyler Rotary 2019-2020
GRANT APPLICATIONS
South Tyler Rotary is accepting applications for grants from the proceeds of the 2019 Spaghetti Supper August 1 through September 9. The Grant Application is available on the STR website. Please share with organizations you think should submit a request.
The grant committee will meet after the September 9 deadline to determine how to distribute the grants this year. We may decide to distribute many smaller grants, as we have in years past. Or, we might choose to make a bigger impact in our community with a larger grant and a few smaller ones. If you have interest in serving on the grant committee, contact Diane Kavanaugh.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Jackie Cannon
Jackie Cannon is the mother of two grown children, Zach and Zane; one special daughter-in-law , Taylor; and two deceased children, Zephan and Molly. Currently, Jackie has four glorious grandchildren who live in Tyler, and a fifth precious grandbaby will be added next January.
Jackie has been married to Bruce for 41 years, and she considers her family a blessed gift from God.
After retiring from 26 years in public education, she began serving daycare teachers and children with challenging behaviors through Champions for Children, a nonprofit that helps all children be ready for school so they can reach success in school and life. Since her work has always been her hobby, she chose careers that align with her personal passion for children.
Her favorite tradition involves Christmas ... when she and Bruce married in 1978, her husband began reading the Christmas story (Luke 2) from the Bible before the family opened presents. It set the stage for the true meaning of Christmas, which made the festivities even more special. When her oldest son, Zach turned 4, he began reading the Christmas story from the Bible on Christmas Eve. Every year since - for 33 years - Zach has read the Christmas story from the Bible before the family opens presents.
Thank you, Jackie, for being a Rotary ambassador everywhere you go - we appreciate YOU!
