Wild Polio Virus Summary:
The number of wild polio cases for 2024 as of October 9, 2024 is 50. There were 28 in Pakistan and 22 in Afghanistan. 
The total number of wild polio cases for 2023 were 12. There were 6 in Pakistan and 6 in Afghanistan.

The total number of wild polio cases in 2022 were 30. There were 2 in Afghanistan, 20 in Pakistan, and 8 in Mozambique.
 
The total number of wild polio cases in 2021 were 6. There was 1 in Pakistan, 1 in Malawi, and 4 in Afghanistan.
 
The total number of wild polio cases in 2020 were 140. There were 84 in Pakistan and 56 in Afghanistan.

Headlines:
Circulating variant poliovirus (cVDPV) has been isolated from environmental samples in French Guiana and Spain. In French Guiana, cVDPV3 was isolated from samples collected in Cayenne province in May, June and August. In Spain, cVDPV2 was isolated from a single positive sample collected in Barcelona in September. Advance notifications for these viruses were included in last week’s update.

Summary of new polioviruses this week: 
  • Pakistan: four WPV1 cases and 50 WPV1-positive environmental samples
  • Angola: one cVDPV2 case
  • French Guiana (France): three cVDPV3-positive environmental samples
  • Niger: four cVDPV2-positive environmental samples
  • Nigeria: four cVDPV2 cases
  • South Sudan: one cVDPV2 case and two cVDPV2-positive environmental samples
  • Spain: one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample
  • Yemen: one cVDPV2-positive environmental sample
Afghanistan:
 
No WPV1 cases were reported this week. The total number of cases for the year remains 22. 
 
Pakistan:
 
  • Four WPV1 cases were reported this week from Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh provinces, bringing the total number of cases this year to 28. The new cases had onset of paralysis in September.
  • Fifty WPV1-positive environmental samples were reported this week, from Balochistan, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh provinces. Samples were collected in August and September.
