One of our service projects is coming to an end, at least in this format. We had a good crew of Longview-Greggton Rotarians show up bright and early on Friday, Oct. 11 (photo below), to help with the East Texas Food Bank distribution at Maude Cobb. With the food bank’s opening of its Longview Resource Center here in Longview, the food distributions are coming to an end. We plan to be involved with one more next month.
It’s hard to believe our club has been involved with them for more than four years. This next photo below was taken in September 2020, but we were there even before that.
We’ll be looking for new ways to be involved with the food bank and their new resource center. If you have other ideas for service projects, please share them with our Director of Service Projects Tyler Rainer.
We also said goodbye to longtime member the Rev. Dr. Richard Emerson this month as he transitions away from Longview. With more than 18 years in the club, Emerson joined in September 2006. We wish him well.
World Polio Day was again this year on Oct. 24. If you haven’t seen the recent polio counts that were posted on our website and shared through email by Foundation Director Holly Fuller, you can find them here. The case counts are going in the wrong direction. If this moves you to donate to help with Rotary International’s effort to end polio, you can do so here. November is also Foundation month, so it’s a good time to think about how contributing financially helps fund projects locally and beyond.
Speaking of those projects, we heard from Past District Governor Carroll Greenwaldt (of the downtown club) this past Friday about the important work District 5830 has been involved with in Guatemala. It was inspiring to see how that effort has improved conditions for folks in that area.
The next Interact meeting at Pine Tree High School will be at 4:15 p.m. tomorrow (Nov. 6). We’ll be adding those dates and times to our calendar here on the website shortly. It would be great to have some members attend their meetings.
We have a few things coming up that you’ll want to keep on your calendar:
- The club’s Christmas party will be Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Hugmans’ home, 6-9 p.m.
- We are ringing the bell for the Salvation Army on Saturday, Dec. 21. When I checked last, we still needed one person for one 1-hour time slot. You can sign up here.
- As we near the holiday season, there are several Fridays we will not be meeting. Those are Nov. 29, Dec. 20 and 27, and Jan. 3.
