This week’s speaker was the relatively new Executive Director for the YWCA in Binghamton, Alanna Shaikh. She is also a Rotarian – Binghamton Noon club that meets just steps away from her office!  Prior to joining YWCA, she worked overseas running programs for women & children, so she came to the organization with a TON of experience!  Alanna shared that the main programs that the YWCA center mostly around housing.  There are 4 housing sites, they provide emergency shelters in a few locations in our region, apartments with support and wrap-around services as well.  There is a 4-star childcare center located in their downtown location offering slots to 48 children ranging in age from infant to 8 years old! AND, we have had presenter in the past form their EncorePlus program – providing cancer prevention / detection outreach.  They have 83 employees – Alanna referred to as a “team of special people”.  Donor contributions go mainly to support the childcare program, hosing – as grants from NYS cover only “bare bones” & the women’s health program – EncorePlus.  Future goals for the organization:  Adding more housing sites; The Coppens Intergenerational Campus–the building is paid for, need is for additional $2MM for childcare component; Develop school age programs for girls.
