OUR NEW BOARD MEETS AND DECIDES...
NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
Senior Services Plus Chief Executive Officer Theresa Collins joined us via Zoom on Thursday to provide an overview of the programs offered both at the center in Alton and in home. SSP has been serving the area for over 48 years. Their service territory covers seven counties and employs 400 people who serve 30,000 clients. The Meals on Wheels program serves 650 Madison and St. Clair County seniors on a daily basis delivering food and much needed social contact. They have staff that visits 800 clients daily to assist with life activities. The new fitness center is open with restrictions. SSP also offers an information and assistance program that helps seniors navigate red tape and other obstacles to gaining access to a variety of programs. Let's not forget about the relatively new handyman program that provides dependable and affordable assistance to seniors in need of small home repairs. At least three new faces were among the 24 members who met in person on Thursday. They were joined by four Zoomers.

The buffet featured chicken fried steak 'n milk gravy, whipped taters 'n milk gravy, rice casserole, rolls, salad, cake and sugar free cherry pie. Allen was impressed with the carbo-load potential.
There are in fact two EmilyW's in our area. We are comfortable suggesting that our Emily is the better of the two.
PaulH told us that MarkS has spoken with Madison County Transit Managing Director SJ Morrison about the bus shelter. SJ told Mark that $8K will buy us a sponsored shelter for 10 people. Does that sound like a better price than a park bench for $5K?

RhondaB encourages everyone continue sharing info about our Music Bingo night via all your personal and social network contacts. There is no limit to how many participants we have that evening. There will be 6 or 7 rounds of BINGO. This IS NOT trivia, you don't need to know anything about music, just match the song title on the screen with the titles on your electronic bingo card.
MarkS had a make-up from the College Park FL club.

RhondaB was happy to report that the the first day of our Facebook auction was viewed 1,000 times. New auction items will be displayed daily. Go to our Facebook public (not group) page and place a bid. Bid high and bid often.
DonnaK and SherryT refused to pick the joker and win the $18 jackpot. GeorgeT was happy to receive the scratch-off. Speaking of scratch-off's, SherryT and SandyS have put together a nice board loaded with a variety of Illinois lottery tickets.Win the board to win BIG!

Maine’s Porcupine Islands are named because of their supposed resemblance to a group of the small, spiky critters from above — not because of any notable porcupine population. Sheep Porcupine Island, Burnt Porcupine Island, Long Porcupine Island, and Bald Porcupine Island are uninhabited, although several are part of the rugged and beautiful Acadia National Park. (Burnt Porcupine Island is privately owned, and has been in the same family for more than a century.) Though the islands aren’t known for their porcupines, they are important nesting areas for seabirds and bald eagles. They get their sloped shape from glaciers that retreated through the area millions of years ago. Located in Frenchman Bay on Maine’s coast, the islands are popular with kayakers and photographers drawn to the scenic beauty.

The Wood River Board of Directors has approved the membership of JeanK (smart move!)
DaveM made an interesting presentation about his favorite topic, the St. Louis Regional Airport at the East Alton meeting. Ed Jones Financial Advisor Barbara Croft talked about $$$ things at the Wood River meeting.
Pat Devening levied a bunch of fines. Paul G and JohnP were among the "victims".
Dick Bell was mentioned in both newsletters. He was listed as "Chairman" in East Alton and won a $ in the Wood River 50-50.
The upcoming 3 club combo meeting would be hosted by East Alton at the Keasler Rec Center on March 19th.
The idea for an Interact club was circulating at EA-WR HS.
The Wood River club recently hosted a social night for members and guests.
LoriP began circulating BaseballMania tickets.
LeonardB offered this bit of advice "The easiest way to find something that is lost is to buy a replacement.

We are well into this Rotary year and what a year it has been for the Rotary Representatives to the United Nations and other international organizations! As Rotary’s “ambassadors” to 22 UN and key agencies, our work normally is to meet strategic personnel and develop relationships that are conducive to working together on Rotary’s areas of focus. This is not an easy task in the midst of a pandemic. Like all Rotarians, we have had to adapt to doing things differently through virtual meetings – it’s diplomacy via the internet!
Retired Swiss Ambassador Walter Gyger, now Rotary’s Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, spent the last year planning the Peace Project Incubator which had to be repurposed to a virtual meeting in November. This meeting was in association with the Rotary Action Group for Peace, in keeping with the network’s new action plan – to better connect the representatives with various Rotary entities. Walter also involved Rotary Peace Fellows, inviting them to introduce more than 50 ready-to-go peace projects seeking support, resources, and engagement from Rotary clubs.
