TRIVIA TIME
NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
Past (not passed) District Governor Brian Barstead joined us via Zoom on Thursday to share a program he calls "How I learned to be happy for 27¢ a day". That equates to $100 over a year. Brian told us that a $100 per Rotarian per year donation to the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund would provide funding for many local and international projects. Funding of $3000 per project will soon be available for clubs in District 6460. What will be our project? He also told us about a matching Paul Harris Fellowship points match program available to all District Rotarians for donations ranging from $250-$1,000 through the end of June.
A giant thanks to RhondaB and JeanK for putting together our Music Bingo event last week (and our first RbE event). These two members get it done! Rhonda announced that we should net around $1,000. We had almost 40 cards in play that evening. Let's also thank those members who were involved with sponsorships, either directly or through their businesses: PaulG, ErinP, SherryT, JeanK, ChrisL, RobinK, JoeS, AlanaY, LeonardB, Alex,S, and DonnaK. Also, a nod to those who donated items for the Facebook auction that preceded the bingo event.
We had 23 "roomers" under Julia's wet roof and 6 "Zoomers" on Thursday. It was nice to have MikeK joining us in person for the first time.
Opening duties were handled by RhondaB, RickH and RodneyD.
An FYI-The photos taken during our meetings and events are available for viewing in the photos section of our web site by looking under the Rotary year or event title. The thumbnail pix can be enlarged by double-clicking on the photo.
Early arrivals included AllenH, DarrenC and BradL.
Guess what? Julia's fried chicken (a bit on the spicy side) and infamous Rotary G-beans arrived a week earlier than anticipated. Rolls, salad, cake and sugar free pie rounded out the meal.
For the second week in a row LindseyH escorted Wood River Parks and Rec Director Jason Woody to our meeting. Word "leaked" after the meeting that he may become the first new RbE Rotarian. No pressure. Prez Chris had some very positive comments about how much Jason hustled to complete the paperwork for the recently announced $2.5 million PARC state grant that will help fund the new WR rec complex. Well done! Great news for the entire Riverbend area.
Birthday greeting go out to GeorgeT, today's the day!
DonnaK tried to throw RhondaB under the
Rotary bus over a seating issue. No worries, Rhonda emerged with nary a skid mark.
If you participate in the Amazon Smile program you may have received a recent email from Amazon indicating that since the former East Alton club began participating in the program our foundation has received almost $400 in donations from Amazon. The program is pretty straight forward, you link your Amazon account to the East Alton Rotary Foundation account and .5% of your purchase goes to our foundation. It's easy $$ for our foundation. There's a direct link on our home web site or you can look us up using smile.amazon.com.
Shameless plugs were shared by RodneyD for an upcoming film, SherryT for early voting and LindseyH for the WR library sponsored voters guide.
BradL won the award for the biggest umbrella. Family sized!
RhondaB announced that we have two students signed-up for the virtual RYLA conference on April 17th. One each from our two high schools.
If you are scheduling a speaker for a Zoom presentation, request that they join us @ 12:40 for their presentation Please provide their name and presentation topic to LoriP for listing on our web site.
Last to arrive on Thursday were PaulH and MarkV.
Virtual Color Run registration is under way. Adults are $30, kids are $25. Sponsorships are available from $100 to $500.The event is scheduled for the June 4-6 weekend. It's time to start promoting this great event. The last Color Run (2019) netted $7000. Here's the link to sign up https://bit.ly/3kOlgrp
SAA SherryT recruited Prez Chris as her lugmeister. We nailed 4 out of 5 trivia Q's. AllenH had a chance to answer a baseball Q at the end of the meeting. Alas, the shot clock ran out on him. If you didn't play bingo, pay a $.
LoriP has your pack of 10 Baseball Mania tickets. Each ticket sells for $10. Complete the bottom of each ticket and return with payment to her. We keep 65% of each ticket sold. The contest begins in July and runs 10 weeks. There are 35 weekly winners, from $10 to $250. If you win, look for a check in the mail. Online versions will be available soon.
Guess what? TommieM had her 50-50 card punched for the third week in a row. Since LoriP wasn't in the house, regular winner SherryT took advantage of the opportunity to have her ticket picked. The jackpot rolled. GeorgeM took the scratch-off and was going to use his winnings to create a SPAC, kidding.

What is unique about the "shells" of the Sydney Opera House?
They are each identical in size
From a certain perspective, they create an optical illusion
Combined, they form a sphere
If you yell into them, you hear a minute-long echo
With its distinctive white roof resembling sails or shells and a picturesque location on Sydney Harbour, the Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous structures in the world. It was designed by architect Jørn Utzon, whose team experimented with various echoes of curves before landing on the opera house’s final geometrical shape. At first, Utzon had simply bent a ruler to form the curved shapes that he wanted; however, the need for structural integrity and the lack of reusable formwork resulted in a design that wouldn’t be practical. At last, Utzon arrived at the “Spherical Solution.” He is said to have hit on his “eureka!” moment while peeling an orange, with each shell acquired from a single form: the plane of a sphere. This prompted Utzon to refocus the 14 separate roof pieces into a puzzle-piece set that, together, forms a perfect sphere.

World Water Day focuses on water’s importance
The COVID-19 pandemic has made it clearer than ever that hand washing — which requires a safe water source — is essential to our health. Yet more than 2 billion people worldwide don’t have access to clean water. Since 2014, The Rotary Foundation has invested more than $51 million in global grants to enable clubs to carry out projects that help people around the world with clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. For World Water Day on March 22nd learn how you can get involved in a water project by linking herehttps://wash-rag.org/
