  • Our program presenter was Rotarian Frank McMillan of the College Park (Orlando) FL club. He told us about the Dolly Parton Imagination Library program that his club has been involved with for over eight years. The program currently distributes almost 1.8 million books per month to kids up to age five who are enrolled in the program. The books are mailed to the children's home in their name. The theme of the program is to "dream more, learn more, care more, be more". The cost of the program is $25 per child per year. There are currently no program sponsors in the 62095 and 62024 zip code areas. Additional information can be found via this link https://imaginationlibrary.com/

  • It was another less than stellar day with the trivia Q's posed by Prez Chris. Lugmeister PaulH collected a bunch of $$ when we missed 3 out of 4.
  • PaulH and WendellR preferred that we not mention their colonoscopy conversation, so we won't.
  • It seems as though AllenH and Prez Chris have mastered PaulH's glide to the food line.
  • The seven training presentations from the recent District Training Conference are now available for you to view ( the ones your editor saw were quite good) here's the link to view  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9o1DstmyXTHy9rUqTXviTTuNZ82mXFNX

  • The $130 jackpot will spend another week chillin'. Table neighbors SteveD and MarkA will get their chance to draw this week. WendellR left his scratched scratch-off on the table. You know what that means.

Where is the tallest lighthouse in the U.S.?
Michigan
North Carolina
Massachusetts
Vermont

If you’re planning to climb the tallest lighthouse in the U.S., you’d better come prepared. There are 269 narrow, winding steps to the top of the Cape Hatteras Light Station in Buxton, North Carolina, which was built in 1872 and stands 198 feet above ground (about 18 stories tall). The Cape Hatteras lighthouse guards one of the most dangerous stretches of the Atlantic coastline, a 12-mile-long sandbar called Diamond Shoals, where two currents collide and hundreds of shipwrecks have occurred over the years. The lighthouse is painted in distinctive black-and-white spiral stripes to make it easier for ship captains to navigate in daytime.

Today in History-

1940 – Richard and Maurice McDonald open the first McDonald's restaurant.
1941 – Joe DiMaggio begins a 56-game hitting streak.
1963 – Project Mercury: The launch of the final Mercury mission, Mercury-Atlas 9 with astronaut Gordon Cooper on board. He becomes the first American to spend more than a day in space, and the last American to go into space alone.

2010 – Jessica Watson becomes the youngest person to sail, non-stop and unassisted around the world solo

Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club answers call for help from Indian group
The Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo (CA)  is answering a plea for help from half a world away, as COVID-19 continues to ravage India.
In January 2020, Mike Fuqua and a small group representing the Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club spent nearly two weeks in the city of Agra, India, the home of the Taj Mahal, helping administer polio vaccines to children in rural villages.
“People in Rotary talk about their ’Rotary’ moment. That was certainly one of them,” said Fuqua.
More than a year later, the local service organization was once again called into action amid a massive COVID-19 surge in India.
“It's heartbreaking to see what this is doing to the people. It’s hard to take,” said Fuqua.
“The mood of the people is very tense. We don't know what we should do, because everyone is dying,” said Rahul Wadhwa.
From his home, Wadhwa, Fuqua’s Rotary Club counterpart in Agra, India, spoke of the dire situation in his city: an oxygen and vaccine shortage, and a surplus of desperation. He said those testing positive for COVID-19 are overwhelming hospitals, including many in underserved areas.
“Some … don’t have masks. They are spreading the infection … All the big panic has been created,” said Wadhwa.
In response, Wadhwa said his local leaders have asked for him to distribute COVID support kits, which include masks, thermometers and oximeters, allowing more of those with COVID-19 to quarantine at home.
“We will stop the panic. We will stop the rush. We will give them a chance to the other people who are serious … emergency, so their life can be saved,” said Wadhwa.
Back in San Diego, Fuqua went right to work, starting multiple fundraisers, including a GoFundMe campaign.
San Diegans have responded, raising more than $10,000 and enough money to create 400 hundred kits. The goal is to create at least 600 more kits.
“I am really excited and thankful for San Diego ... We definitely will save lives,” said Wadhwa.
