NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
BILL WELCOMES LAURA
It's time for the annual mid-winter hiatus and trip south, way south. Look for the next Banner on March 7th. Until then...
On Thursday we had the pleasure of meeting at the Riverbend Family Ministries site in Wood River. The primary presenter was Refuge Executive Director Erin Bickle. RFM "queen honcho" Tammy also shared with us some BIG news. Refuge is a six year old organization that provides counseling services to children and caregivers that have suffered ongoing trauma. All services are free and funded by several community organizations. Since their inception they have served over 500 children and currently serve 102 children, 124 caregivers and 100 parents. Tammy was excited to announce that RFM will move across the street later this year. The new 24,000 sq ft building will replace the current 7,000 sq ft facility. The fundraising drive to raise $500,000 kicked off this past Friday. To date, $95K have been pledged.
We welcomed Laura Warful as our newest Rotarian. Bill did the pinning honors.

Which state's name means "Great River" in the Ojibwe language?
Massachusetts
Minnesota
Missouri
Mississippi
The root of the word Mississippi begins with “Messipi” — a French interpretation of the Native American Anishinaabe term “Misi-ziibi,” which translates to “Great River.” This 2,348-mile river is the second largest on the North American continent. It starts in northern Minnesota in Lake Itasca and goes through 10 U.S. states before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana. At its widest point, the Mississippi River stretches seven miles. Interestingly, many of Mark Twain’s stories feature the Mississippi river, which helped cement it into American folklore.

ROTARY ANNOUNCES 2020-21 THEME
Rotary International President-elect Holger Knaack is encouraging Rotarians to seize the many opportunities Rotary offers to enrich their lives and the communities they serve.
Knaack, a member of the Rotary Club of Herzogtum Lauenburg-Mölln, Germany, revealed the 2020-21 presidential theme, Rotary Opens Opportunities, to incoming district governors at the Rotary International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA, on 20 January.
Rotary isn’t just a club for people to join, but rather “an invitation to endless opportunities,” said Knaack, who becomes president on 1 July. He emphasized that Rotary creates pathways for members to improve their lives and the lives of those they help through service projects.
“We believe that our acts of service, big and small, create opportunities for people who need our help,” Knaack said. He added that Rotary creates leadership opportunities and gives members the chance to travel the world to put their service ideas into action and make lifelong connections. “Everything we do opens another opportunity for someone, somewhere,” said Knaack.
