NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
WHERE'S THE BEEF?
  • Look for the next Banner to arrive on January 7th, long after Mark's 1 & 3 and Rod have safely arrived at their personal "winter" wonderlands. There is no noon meeting next week. We celebrate the Christmas season that evening at the Alton Sports Tap. Pork or pasta? Rhonda, Patty and Bill promise a fun evening.
  • 23 members were in the house on Thursday to dine on the beef au jus (where's the beef), boiled taters, g-beans, carrots, salad, red cake and cheesecake. Pat was the first to arrive. He was soon joined by Allen, Bill and Wendell. Rhonda, Paul, Fred and Brad1 were among the last to dine. Everyone was thankful that Sherry was willing to share her warm buns.
  • By the time you read this, Mark3 would have made his Santa cameo at the Winter Wonderland event. Wendell's wife Deisy was planning on being all in as his elf. Bill advised all that the radio code word for $$$ was "donuts". He promised to share his donut holes with everyone.
  • Joe secured a last minute arrival of old glory.
  • "Dapper Dan" Darren was in the house looking all Chicago-ish.
  • Where was Lori? She sent a Christmas card for all to sign. It will be presented to Charlie Kunz along with a Christmas flower. That's very thoughtful.
  • Sherry reports that Dani will be headed to Chicago this weekend for a fun exchange student event. Do you think she will need some gloves?
  • Erin was in the house and proudly announced that she was recently married and honeymooned in Sydney, Australia not Nebraska. Fingers crossed, she foresees the possible opportunity to attend more noon meetings. She also read a thank you note from scholarship student Vivian, who is attending Easter Illinois University.
  • It was Flip Wilson who said "the devil made me do it".
  • Chris1 announced that we will have one final opportunity to donate to our adopted family at the Christmas party.
  • Don't forget to show up for your Salvation Army bell ringing shift.
  • SAA Bill recruited Sherry to be the Bag Gal. We recognized Joe for his 17 years of Rotary service and serenaded Chris1 on his birthday. We found out that the only states with towns named "Christmas" are located in Arizona and Florida. A wee bit of irony there. Trivia answers included John Lennon, Albert Kahn (who you ask? Link here http://tinyurl.com/z72sd3x ), the NFL and Falkland Islands.
  • Opening duties were provided by Chris2, Rhonda and Bill.
  • With the rollover 50-50 tickets safely in the bucket, Erin drew tickets belonging to Matt and Brad1. No luck there. Lori's ticket won the scratch-off. Sherry promised to get it to her. Wink, wink.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

Corporate membership: What has worked for us and what hasn’t

By Robert Fisher, Rotary Club of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

As the first club chartered in Australia, we have a membership of around 250 people. We had two ‘champions’ who were keen to introduce corporate membership. Over several years, they sought acceptance of this category in the upper layers of Rotary, and eventually were given the go-ahead to try it as part of a pilot project in 2011.

Motivators

We saw corporate membership as a way to uphold our club’s long tradition of attracting the most senior members of Melbourne’s business community, and tap into corporate networks to use their expertise to enhance our social programs. It was our belief that we could achieve significantly greater impact by getting entire corporations involved. We are able to offer them access to a highly respected service organization, and opportunities for their staff to put in volunteer hours and engage in projects. MY JOB SEARCH

  • My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned. Couldn't concentrate
  • Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the ax
  • After that, I tried being a tailor, but wasn't suited for it--mainly because it was a sew-sew job
  • Next, I tried working at a muffler factory, but that was too exhausting
  • Then I attempted being a deli worker, but any way I sliced it...couldn't cut the mustard
  • Next was my job in a shoe factory. Tried hard, but just couldn't fit in
  • After many years of trying to find steady work, I finally got a job as a historian-until I realized there was no future in it
  • My last job was at Starbucks, but had to quit because it was the same old grind
BOTTOM LINE

Annual sales of men's undergarments across North America are now $1.1 billion higher compared to 2009, giving credence to the so-called Men's Underwear Index. The index, whose champions include former Ferderal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan, posits that sales of necessities like underwear are normally stable but rise in times of economice recovery and growth.-Qz.com

About 52% of Americans say they own stock, according to Gallup, matching a record low set in 2013. Stock ownership peaked just before the financial crisis, with nearly two-thirds of Americans then invested in the stock market.-BloombergView.com
