Which mountain’s name translates to "Shining Mountain"?
Fuji
Matterhorn
Kilimanjaro
Denali
The name of Africa's tallest peak (19,341 feet above sea level) comes from two local languages: Swahili and Chagga. When combined, the words translate to "Shining Mountain" or "White Mountain." Alternate names given to Kilimanjaro throughout history translate to "Mountain Where Birds Cannot Fly" and "Mountain of Silver Moons." The Chagga people believe that a spirit lives atop the peak and will cause sickness to some who climb.

DISTRICT ZAMBIA AGRICULTURE PROJECT UPDATE
The District 6460 Vocational Training Team is keeping close tabs on an ongoing improvement project it supports in Zambia.
Team leader Eric Dolbeare of the Rotary Club of Pike County traveled to the south African nation June 12-20 this summer, encouraging more corn farmers to join the program and assessing ways the cooperative effort may expand in the future.
During three meetings held during the trip, 55 prospective members expressed interest in joining the existing 56 co-op members. Introductory meetings in Mukakaulwa and Shipanuku resulted in on-the-spot endorsements by the headmen of the villages.
“The surprisingly large attendance at each of the meetings indicates very strong interest among farmers to receive the VTT training and then join the Cooperative,” Dolbeare said. He added the current recruitment goal is 100-120 members.
Dolbeare was gratified by the voluntary testimonials offered by participating members during his recent trip.
“The comments were nearly identical at each location. Farmers found the tillage provided by the mechanization loosened the soil, allowing the corn roots to grow unrestricted. The soil was better able to absorb the rainfall.” Increased yields of as much as 250% were reported, Dolbeare said.
Should participation increase as projected, Dolbeare sees a possible need for increased local staff. A promising candidate who would be available this fall was interviewed during the trip.
Also looking to the future, Dolbeare began calculations on how much fertilizer local farmers are purchasing and how many members would need to band together to benefit from wholesale purchase of fertilizer by the trailer load. He foresees this may become a viable venture for the co-op within a few years.
On the local level, more support for the Zambia project was seen at the Leadership Celebration and Installation event June 24 at which the Zambia Fundraising Committee raised more than $5,500 for the project. Also, at a separate time, Growmark Foundation has contributed $10,000.
