NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
Picnic in the Park-Our August 29th meeting will be held at the Rotary pavilion in Belk Park. Take the first road to the right after you enter the park from Rock Hill Rd.
On Thursday each table spent a few minutes discussing Prez Bill's "assignment", Your Journey in Rotary. Each member was asked to answer 5 personal Rotary related Q's and then share with your table mates. It was a fun session. He then offered to collect and compile the survey form responses to share at the next board meeting.
A big thank you to MarkSm for volunteering to chair our Chili Dinner on October18th. Save the date, details to follow.

Here are the details about our upcoming club foundation golf scramble on October 25th. Registration starts @ 11 with a shotgun start @ noon. A foursome will cost $400 and include a BBQ lunch and steak dinner. There are five sponsorship levels available from $100 to $1000. He then distributed flyers and encouraged everyone to share them with the golfers you know, friends, family and social media. It's going to be a fun day on a beautiful late October Friday. All proceeds will be used for community enhancement with a goal of making a $15,000 contribution every other year. Make checks payable to our legal name East Alton Rotary Club Foundation. All checks need to go through JoeS so that all sponsorships and teams are correctly recognized. Thanks in advance for your support.

We had a nice crowd of 20 members who brought a lot of fun energy to the room on Thursday. We dined on beef 'n curly noodles, baby carrots, rolls, salad and cake bites.
This is not a mistake. For the second week in a row this happened-The 50-50 jackpot was unclaimed by RobinK and BillP. BillP also won the scratch-off. This is the 3rd week in a row that Bil's ticket has been drawn. It must be his "connections".

At 630 feet tall, Missouri's Gateway Arch is not only the tallest monument in the U.S., but also the tallest arch in the world. Towering over the Mississippi River, it commemorates the westward expansion that helped create today's United States. The arch was designed by Finnish American architect Eero Saarinen during a nationwide competition held in 1947.

The EA club heard a presentation from the district PR rep Allen Stare.
DonnaK was encouraging members to sell their Rotary Raffle tix. While EA members were selling Cosmic Bingo tix.
TommieM visited the EA meeting.
ChrisH and BillP assisted with opening duties. Bill prayed for seconds on ice cream.
Happy Fines were paid by GeorgeM, DonnaK and JohnP.
BillP and SherryT handled SAA duties.
No one claimed the WR $405 jackpot. The $70 EA jacpot rolled after BillP and LoriP failed to find the joker.
ScottL noted that since the annexation of Benbow City in 1917 WR has not been the same.
TommieM was the meeting greeter.

Developing our future generation of leaders

In the summer of 2021, as we were all coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, I had just finished my third year as an assistant governor and one of my final acts was to retire my own Rotary club. The club was small, mighty in service, however it simply could not survive the pandemic as a small club.
I was at a low point personally in Rotary and seriously considered throwing in the towel myself after 28+ years. I had made a commitment and was serving on the board of directors for a joint Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) project called Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders (S4TL) between my district and two neighboring ones, and I wasn’t quite ready to give up on it.
After having canceled the 2020 seminar due to COVID, we had just held a hybrid (two days virtual and two days in person) seminar for about 80 students in July. I knew the long-term viability of the program was in jeopardy if we couldn’t resurrect it. Before the pandemic, we had gathered 165 high school students transitioning from junior (11th grade) to senior (12th grade) year for leadership development training at Florida Southern College in Lakeland.
The phenomenal thing about S4TL is that it gets these young adults out of their comfort zones, gives them an opportunity to live campus life in college dormitories, eat meals in the college cafeteria, all while developing into leaders who are instilled with Rotary values. They go back and serve in their communities and schools.
People ask me why I give up 10 days of my life, sleep less than six hours each night in a dorm room bunk bed, and eat cafeteria food (it’s not good, but the students love it)? It’s to witness the development of these young people and know that our future generation is in good hands!
S4TL includes lectures, discussions, motivational talks, group activities, and interchanges of ideas and concepts to improve leadership abilities. World-renowned speakers are brought in to provide leadership development skills. Recreational and entertainment programs are also provided, and Rotary principles are injected into many aspects of the seminar.
