  • Don't forget to check out our Facebook and Instagram pages (links are available at the top of our main web page. Also, join our Facebook group. Want to like/share something, give it a tag @riverbendeastrotary
  • Thursday was our first monthly club assembly. Prez Robin highlighted a few of the goals that she recently shared with us via email. She hopes that we can end the Rotary year with a net gain of three members, have five members involved with Rotary fellowship groups, donate $2,000 to the foundation and $450 to the Polio Plus program. Our club foundation has committed to a $3,000 donation to the DeBell Center Sensory Room. Our foundation has a balance of $153K in investments and $18K in checking. If you have an idea for a foundation funded project let RhondaB know.
  • Friendly reminder-please move the tip box and 50-50 bin to another table when everyone at your table has had the opportunity to "donate".
  • The Soap Box Derby is slated for September 10th. We need someone to coordinate our crosswalk volunteers.
  • RodC and RhondaB were our "scooters".
  • Congrats to RodneyD on his three years of club service. But wait, there's more, he has been involved with Rotary since 1994.
  • LoriP sez our Baseball Mania net is $2,045. Let's now hope that we can shake the $10 doldrums and claim some $250 winners.
  • MarkA can use some help with entertainment and a side dish coordinator for the Family Cookout/Steak Fry on October 20th.
  • ChrisH recently checked the IRS web site for the status of an amended return. The IRS advises that it takes about 20 weeks to process and don't call them. Quality customer service!
  • As you read this our Prez is enjoying some gulf breezes beachside in Bama and some quality time with her family.
  • MarkV presented scholarship checks to Marlo who will be attending the Savannah College of Art and Design and to Jack for will be pursuing a degree in Industrial Maintenance at SWIC.
  • There were 20 members in the house on Thursday, the early birds included Prez Robin, setting a sterling example, AllenH and RodC. SherryT was the last to arrive, clocking in at 12:18. She was proceeded by LeonardB, RhondaB and BradP.
  • JohnP "suggested" that our Prez could be a bit more aggressive with bell ringing. Bang that gong!
  • Our Chili Supper will be held on Friday October 14th. We need a chairperson. We will set up shop at EA-WR high school.
  • SAA LeonardB, with an assist from lugmeister JohnP collected a tardy fine from Leonard and a Happy Fine from SherryT. Which six states are the longest or widest? We missed Michigan, Montana and New York
  • PrezRobin wants everyone to try and attend our September 1st meeting to greet our new District Governor.
  • Italian beef was our entree accompanied by bakers, rolls, salad and cookies.
  • Opening duties were handled by Prez Robin, JeanK and RodneyD.
  • 50-50 opportunities were afforded to LoriP and AllenH. No luck there. JohnP won the scratch off.
Ciao! Have a fine and dry weekend.
Au revoir!

Which animal are the Canary Islands named after?
Cat
Bird
Dog
Monkey

You might logically conclude that the cheerful yellow birds are the namesake for the Canary Islands, off the coast of Morocco. However, the etymology actually comes from the Latin phrase “Canariae Insulae” which means the "island of dogs." This is showcased in the islands’ flag which features two dogs in the center. Although historians can’t quite agree on how the name came to be, one prominent theory is that early European settlers of the region discovered large dogs on the now-Spanish island and simply named the island after them. Another suggests that the name was derived from the original inhabitants of the islands, the Guanches, who treated dogs as holy animals. Still wondering if the islands have any connection to the birds? It turns out that canaries were actually named after the islands, not the other way around.

Social media makes expanding your club’s reach easier than ever, but how? There are tips, tricks, and tools for creating content for social platforms, and the goal is simple: connection. A well-built social media presence will help you create connections in your community and beyond, from showcasing your club’s success to building awareness of its presence. To help boost your social media savvy, we’ve put together the following eight tips and tools:

  • Pick your platform. With so many social media platforms available, getting started can be intimidating. Choose one platform to focus on and grow from there. We recommend starting with Facebook, which has the largest user base.
  • Assign roles. The first step in creating content is capturing it. Assign a designated photographer to take pictures at club events and service projects. Additionally, pick a point person to manage your club’s social media posts.
  • Be consistent. Whether you post daily, weekly, or monthly, set a goal to share on social media regularly. Consistent posting helps cultivate followers.
  • Take photos that tell a story. Opt for images that show action rather than just offering group shots. Show people getting their hands dirty, giving out supplies, or sharing a moment of laughter.
  • Lead with impact and encourage engagement. When planning an event, project, or fundraiser, think about how you’ll use social media to showcase it. Tell a story by identifying the problem, your solution, and its impact. Or consider what one thing you want someone to know after viewing your post.
  • Celebrate partnership and participation. Tag participants and community partners in your posts. Avoid Rotary jargon. Not everybody who reads your posts will be familiar with acronyms like PETS or RYLA. Remember that those engaging with your posts are prospective members!
  • Find inspiration. Examine the content you engage with on social media. What captures your attention and holds your interest? How can you apply that to content you create? Check out Rotary International’s profiles and posts for more inspiration (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter).
  • Use the Brand Center. The Brand Center is your one-stop shop for logos, creative assets, guidelines, and more. Be sure to visit often as new materials are added for your use.
