              NEWS NOTES & NONSENSE

  SPOILER ALERT, NO WINNER TODAY

  • Paul presented a program about a potential fund raiser called Bonvera. It involves folks ordering everyday type items via an online portal assigned to our club. There's no direct selling on our part. Interesting.
  • Congrats to BradL celebrating 8 years as a club member.
  • A couple of meeting firsts-Lori being the first person in the food line and Paul using technology for his presentation.
  • Dick's goal is to read 100 books in 2018. He's at 79. Will he make it?
  • MarkS once again covered for Cory. He's now off to the South Pacific for some R & R for the next month. Aloha Mate!
  • Rumor has it that Virgil has returned from Cali.
  • It was revealed that the artist who created our Turkey Fund can many moons ago was...Lori. A lot of donations have passed through that little box.
  • MarkV began circulating the sign-up sheet for our Salvation Army bell ringing gig at the East Alton Schnucks on December 8th, 10A-8P. He requested only one member per line until all hour long slots are covered. the November 29th shifts are already covered.
  • Rod arrived with folio in hand. Pretty darn official looking.
  • Please invite a veteran to lunch on November 8th, in appreciation for their service. The meal's on us. Let Lori know if you plan to bring someone so she can insure that there is sufficient food on hand. In lieu of a formal program, each vet will be given an opportunity to introduce themself.
  • It appears that the "Captains of America" luncheon took its toll on attendance. The early arrivals included Allen, Dick and MarkS. Among the last of the 15 members on hand were both Brad's, ChrisH, Bill and MarkV.
  • The Turkey Fund has grown to $175.  The can will be on hand each Thursday thru November 15th. All donations will be given to Operation Blessing to assist with Thanksgiving meals.
  • Lunch featured roast beast, sweet taters, Rotary green beans, torpedo rolls, salad, cake and cookies
  • SAA Queenie's continued absence has created quite a stir and a call for her to be demoted to Princess. Your thoughts? Court jester ChrisL was nowhere to be found.
  • Opening duties were performed by Emily, Allen and Bill
  • The $86 50-50 jackpot was unclaimed by Wendell and Patty.  Patty spent her last $2 scratch-off on the big lottery prize. She now has another one.
  • That's all from here, have a fine and dry weekend. Ciao!

What is the windiest city in the world?

Wellington, New Zealand

Cape Town, South Africa
Chicago, USA

Reykjavík, Iceland

Watch out for the winds of Wellington! The hilly seaside New Zealand capital is known to be the windiest city in the world. The blustery city once experienced winds at 154 miles per hour. Weather experts attribute this to its position on the edge of the Cook Strait. The mountainous areas of New Zealand's South Island and the bottom of its North Island create one of geography's most powerful wind tunnels.

IMPROVED SANITATION IN A SCHOOL IN GHANA

By Vera Lamiley Allotey, Rotary Club of Accra Dansoman

Rotary International partners with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to support lasting, positive change in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
In July, I left my home with fellow Rotarians to visit Upper Denkyira East in the central region of Ghana to see progress on water and sanitation projects. Despite riding in a very new vehicle, the ride was bumpy due to poor road conditions. But we enjoyed talking and learning about the Rotary-USAID partnership during our more than six-hour journey. I was encouraged by what I saw and the impact Rotary is having in the region.
After a necessary meeting with the municipal assembly in Denkyira, we arrived at a secondary school to inspect latrines that had been built. The headmaster welcomed us and showed us the changing room that had been created for girls. I showed the students how to properly wash their hands using the bucket stands that we donated to the school and two students were asked to demonstrate the proper techniques to their friends. We then moved to the borehole and the project manager led us in a series of stroke tests to determine the water flow from the pump. All was in working order. SMILE
Yesterday I was at Costco buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Owen, the Wonder Dog, and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.
What did she think I had - an elephant?
I told her that no, I didn't have a dog - I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.
I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet, and the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete, so it works well, and I was going to try it again.
Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me.
I told her no, I had stopped to pee on a fire hydrant and a car hit me.
