HABITAT ISSUE
OCTOBER 21, 2017
NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
SOAPBOX SMILES
Finally...a new Banner, but just one. Look for the next issue on November 4th. So much for that.
Thursday's program was presented by Sherry Gilleland, founder of Dream Home Charities. She spoke about the significant growth of the charity and its long term plans. Take a look at the video.
In review-thanks to all who helped at the Soapbox Race last month, congrats to Lori for receiving the district "Difference Maker" award, thanks to all the folks who provided support to Mark 3 at the Family Cookout last Thursday.
Next week we will be installing fiberglass insulation at the Habitat for Humanity house located at 429 Lincoln (5th and Lincoln Streets). Gloves are a great idea. Long sleeves may be in order to keep the itch factor down. If you have a staple gun (with staples) and utility knife, bring those too. We gather at noon with a box lunch. Mark thinks we can knock out the project in about three hours. Whatever time you can spare would be helpful. Two years ago this project was voted the most popular program of the year. Just sayin'...
We had 24 members in the house including Bill and Rhonda who arrived before 11:40 and Paul who arrived an hour later. Other post-noon, pre-bell arrivals included Rod, "whistling" Dave, Patty and Chris 2.
Sherry's mum, Karen, joined us for the meal before she returned to Stuart, Florida.
Lunch include a brown protein, semi-mashed taters, Rotary g-beans, salad and cookies.
We hit the member trifecta on Thursday. In the house were all our Mark's, Brad's and Chris's.
Joe won the washer toss last week.
Bill make-up at the Riverbend Rotary recently.
Mark 3 really enjoys his Edwardsville 3-peat. Wife Nancy, not so much.
Our speaker was once known as Sherry Tite. (Insert comment here.) Our Sherry told an amusing tale about some poor high school lad mistaking her for the other Sherry.
The Turkey Fund continues to make the rounds.
East Alton-Wood River High School scholarship interviews were recently completed by Lindsey and Randy. Roxana interviews happen in two weeks.
SAA Lindsey recruited Randy to help with the fleecing duties. Announcements were made by Dave, Brad 2 and Randy. All the trivia q's were from the October Rotarian magazine. Correct answers were hard to come by.
Randy announced that the dedication of the new veterans pocket park would be held on November 11th at 11AM. Hope you can make it!
Rhonda announced that the Christmas party would be held on December 14th at Tony's Bluff City Grill.
The 50-50 $45 jackpot was unscathed by Rick and Lori. Randy had the scratch-off.
Opening duties were performed by Mark 3, Brad 1 and Dave.
That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

Why Rotary scholarships are sustainable investments
By Sarah Ehlinger Affotey
After receiving an Ambassadorial Scholarship from Rotary in 2011, I put a lot of pressure on myself to “do it right,” or in other words, give Rotary a solid return on its investment. With each passing month in Ghana, what I had first deemed as peripheral – the friendships, conversations, and breakdown of stereotypes – were actually advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace. How ingenious that this scholarship allowed me to advance Rotary’s mission subconsciously?
Despite all these “non-tangible” returns, at the end of my master’s program in Ghana I was itching for real-world action. While waiting for my thesis review and graduation schedule (sometimes a yearlong process), a Rotarian from my host club told me about her NGO on the outskirts of Accra. She mentioned the community suffered from a large waste pile contaminating their water. With my background in environmental health, I immediately latched onto the potential project but didn’t know how to help make it happen. To continue reading link herehttp://bit.ly/2hMYeRX
