MADCO HISTORY ISSUE

NEWS NOTES & NONSENSE
RHONDA WELCOMES JAMIE. WE DO TOO!
We had about 30 members and guests attend our Family Cookout on the 11th. The food, fun and fellowship were excellent. A hearty thanks go out to "commandant" MarkA for being the furry face of the event, Sally for coordinating the sides and Lindsey for providing the fun. The sides were all delicious. The only glitch was the Burger King moment. Let's quote Allen here, "All the steaks I had were good!"
The program was presented by two fine gentlemen from SIUE, Steve Hansen and Ben Ostermeier. They are both involved with the Madison Historical Online Encyclopedia and Digital Archive for Madison County, Illinois. Steve provide background details on the project and Bern spoke about the web site design and content. Since the last book on Madison County history was published in the early 20th century a lot has happened. The project hopes to capture some of those details via oral histories and digitized documentation. Everyone is welcome to make a contribution. Find the site at http://www.madison.historical.siue.eduYou may also reach Steve at shansen@siue.edu
Earlier this week Lori sent you a December calendar with all of our activities listed. The dates can also e found on our web site (look left my friend, look left.) Don't forget to add the dates to your calendar.
Rhonda and Patty welcomed our newest Rotarian, Jamie Wells. She is the Head Librarian at the Roxana Public Library. We are delighted to have her as a member.
Happy "39th" birthday to Wendell!
Randy reported that he and Lindsey have selected the scholarship students from both high schools. A job well done.
Please invite a veteran to lunch on November 8th, in appreciation for their service. The meal's on us. Let Lori know if you plan to bring someone so she can insure that there is sufficient food on hand.
Congrats to ChrisH who was recently appointed to the airport board.
Allen, Rod and MarkS led the parade of 20 members arriving at Julia's. DaveM and ChrisL were in the house post-noon. Wishing they were here: Ty, Pat, Darren, Cory, Matt, Queenie, Erin, DaveS, Sandy, Dick, Sherry and MarkV.
The Turkey Fund grew to $93. It will be on hand each Thursday thru November 15th. All donations will be given to Operation Blessing to assist with Thanksgiving meals.
Lunch featured a burger and fries bar, lettuce and noodle salads. And don't forget the dessert, like I just did.
Once again, Queenie appointed ChrisL as her surrogate SAA. He wrangled Nate to take care of collecting the $$$. Not here/there last week? Pay a $. DaveM had an announcement. We nailed 3 out of 4 trivia Q's. Topics included the town of Romance, Girl Scouts, American children and Michael Jordan.
Opening duties were performed by Randy, Paul and Dave.
The $81 50-50 jackpot was left untouched by Lori and, once again, Allen. Bill took the scratch-off.
That's all from here, have a fine and dry weekend. Ciao!

In 1565, Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés was ordered by King Philip II to colonize Florida. The explorers arrived off the coast on August 28, the Feast Day of St. Augustine, and when they settled on the land eleven days later, the city was named in the Saint's honor. This Spanish settlement was established 42 years before the English colony at Jamestown and 55 years before the Pilgrims reached Plymouth Rock, making it the oldest permanent European settlement in North America.

ROTARY HOSTS LAW ENFORCEMENT ROUNDTABLE
LIMA, OHIO — Four Allen County police chiefs visited the Lima Rotary Club meeting Monday to discuss community issues and explain how the job has changed over the last decade due to shifting public expectations and emerging new technologies.
As is the case with many governmental agencies, law enforcement departments have been asked to do more with less as budgets shrink. The job has evolved as a result.
Shawnee Township Police Chief Mike Keith said his department began dealing with diminishing budgets in 2005. At that time, new equipment purchases were spaced further apart and training courses weren’t pursued unless required, Keith said.
Allen County Sheriff Matt Treglia said the $8.9 million budget the department receives today must be stretched to fund the Allen County jail — a difficult task when the number of inmates becomes larger than expected.
Meanwhile, the public has changed its perception of law enforcement due to a number of high-profile cases of police abuse. Many metro police departments across the nation have adopted body cameras as a way to add transparency regarding such cases.
Lima Police Chief Kevin Martin said body cameras will soon be equipped by Lima Police Department officers now that City Council has agreed to a roughly $500,000 contract to purchase the equipment. To continue reading, link here https://bit.ly/2yH27QC
