NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
On Thursday, member Tom Stalcup took to the podium wearing his Wood River mayoral hat and shared with us some recent success stories. The city web site continues to expand content allowing for a more transparent city government. Downtown continues to gain traction with the addition of several recent businesses and the promise of more to come. The infrastructure improvements in the I-255/IL 143 area is complete. The area is now open for development. New playground and pickleball courts that have opened and the new rec center is on the horizon.
Early arrivals included Prez Rodney (setting a fine example), AllenH and LoriP.
The slide right in gang grew to include TylerL, PaulH, MarkV, BillP and ChrisH.
Prez Rodney made sure that the cookies on the buffet line were of acceptable quality by sampling one before the lunch line opened. In fact, they were so big that JoeS needed an assist from one of Julia's staffers to get his cookie to the table.

Happy Birthday to you-AlanaY, today. While we are at it, congrats to her on 12 years of club service.
Opening duties were smoothly covered by Prez Rodney, ChrisH and MarkV.
20 members stepped right up to the soft-taco Thursday bar. Caesar salad along with cookies were also available.
Last in the house included BradL, BradP, ChrisH, PaulH.
SAA PattiA collected a $ from those not participating in Baseball Mania. Happy Fines were paid by RobinK, JoeS and TylerL. Cancer recovery, a warmer spring and Barbie were mentioned.
Confusion continues to be the norm for our 50-50 drawing. Who has the deck of cards? How many decks are we using? Is there a joker in any of them? Where's the jackpot cash? It seems that the odds of winning are in the Mega Millions range. Get struck by lightning, you're the winner! BillP won the scratch-off with LeonardB and HenryS having their ticket drawn with the promise of future potential riches.

Every state has selected an official state bird, as designated by each state’s legislature, a practice that began in the 1920s. The most common state bird is the northern cardinal, which represents seven states. Missouri selected the eastern bluebird, a medium-sized songbird with bright blue wings and a reddish-orange chest. Missouri was one of the first states to designate an official state bird in 1927. The eastern bluebird is also the state bird of New York.

District Governor Tony Williams visited the WR club while the EA club heard a presentation about the Adult Education program at LCCC.
JeanK presented GeorgeT with a special award recognizing his help during her year as club prez.
MarkA, MarkSp, LoriP and AllenH arrived early to welcome the three scholarship students who would be receiving checks worth $6,450 from ErinP.
Happy Fines were happily paid by LeonardB, DonnaK and PaulG.
SandyS confirmed that 26 is indeed a larger number than 25.
JohnP was fined for Wearing an obnoxious Cubs shirt.
LoriP announced that 267 Baseball Mania tickets had been sold for a net of $1,735.
The WR club adopted their Mission Statement and Vision Statement.
CoryG and his family had a nice day, indoors, at City Museum.
GeorgeM renewed the club's bingo license. JeanK would serve as the Cosmic Bingo event chair. DonnaK and PaulG would assist.
WendellR was still in Columbia but provided a remote update on the cleft palate project.
Prez MikeK was looking for "major event " suggestions.
RickH announced that the Program of the Year winner was the Habitat for Humanity work day. Got Your Six therapy dogs came in second.
DonnaK would coordinate the Rotary Raffle.
Prez SherryT introduced the newest club member.
TommieM would serve as the upcoming program chair.
SAA BillP was off to Woodstock so RickH served as his sub.

MILESTONE FOR SOUTH AFRICAN CLUB

In July, I became the youngest president in the history of my Rotary club, and the first president of color.
It was while I was sitting in the audience at the Rotary People of Action: Champions of Inclusion concert in Cape Town that I realized the significance of this. I had a conversation with Rotary General Secretary and CEO John Hewko, who encouraged me to share my story. I’m excited about what my presidency could mean to the future of my club, my district, and Rotary in South Africa.
I’ve always advocated for transition in Rotary. I joined the Rotary family in 2007 as an Interactor in Nigeria, where I grew up. I didn’t even know it was called Interact. I just volunteered at Rotary projects, and we would meet informally to plan our own activities.
I joined Rotaract when I began college in Nigeria. When I moved to Cape Town to further my education, I became a member of the Rotaract Club of Blouberg. Four years later, in 2020, I joined the Rotary Club of Blouberg.
