               IN STEREO
  • In lieu of a formal program, Prez Bill asked each table to brainstorm and come up with three activities that we have not done before. The results were quite impressive. Lindsey served as scribe. Bill and our board will decide what happens next.
  • Dave announced the voting results for the 5th Thursday classification talks. Nathan will be up at the end of this month, Rick will take the podium in November. Looking to 2018, Randy is scheduled for March, Chris 1 for May and Brad 2 next November( don't forget to remind him).
  • Allen and Darren arrived significantly earlier than Lori and Wendell. The latest of the 23 members were Sandy, Sherry, Paul and Rhonda. Bill's late arrival can't be blamed on the Cardinals, or maybe it can.
  • The buffet featured baked fish, lasagna, g-beans, mac 'n cheese, rolls, salad, fresh fruit (the strawberries may have been a first) and cookies.
  • Dick returned and promptly had the chance to draw the joker. A 4 of hearts just won't do.
  • Allen and Darren spent time reminiscing about favorite youth dining haunts. For everyone else, talk of the "rally cat" had to suffice.
  • If you are ever involved with replacing a roof, demolishing a building or digging up a sewer line, it's a good idea to make sure you are at the right house. As Joe likes to say, "you can't undemo a house".
  • Longtime East Alton business, Wholesale Carpet, is closing. They have been in business since the early 70's.
  • Mark 3 announced that our family cookout will be held on October 12th at Kendall park. He has also penciled us in for a insulation install at the new Habitat house. It will be late October at the earliest.
  • Congrats to Sandy's brother for wining $250 in the Baseball Mania contest. Lori reported that we have a couple of tickets in the top 10 this week (top 10 receive $$). Watch for your weekly e-mail from her to see if it's you.
  • Chris 2 and Randy claim that Lindsey was trying to sell them CD's. Did you know she was in a band?
  • Did you get your Rotary decal from Bill? Not displaying it on your vehicle is a finable offense.
  • We celebrated Randy and Sherry's birthdays. SAA Lindsey drafted Randy as the "bag guy". Dave was the only one with an announcement. We rocked the trivia Q's, 5 for 5.
  • The $33 50-50 jackpot was left to grow after Sandy and Dick both came up with red 4's. Allen worked on the scratch-off.
  • Opening duties were performed by Mark 1, Chris 2 and Brad 2, who claimed that he didn't have a prayer.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine, dry weekend.

The benefits of a friendship exchange

By Kamlesh (Kam) Chandan, assistant governor for District 7680 and a member of the Rotary Club of Lake Norman/Huntersville, North Carolina, USA

In February, I had the opportunity to lead our first outbound friendship exchange to my home away from home – India. Rotary Friendship Exchange is an international exchange program for Rotary members and friends that allows participants to take turns hosting one another in their homes and clubs.
Exchanges offer unique chances for cultural immersion and interchange. Rotary members in District 3201 (Tamil Nadu, India) invited members in District 7680 (North Carolina, USA) to take part in our first outbound friendship. Last year, four Rotarians and their spouses from Tamil Nadu visited Charlotte and stayed with families in North Carolina, ending in a visit to our district conference.
Our outbound team travelled to my wife’s hometown – Coimbatore. My father-in-law Pratap Gokuldas who inspired this exchange is a past governor of District 3201. Mark Daniels of the Charlotte Providence Rotary; Bill Burnham of Meck South Rotary; Luther & Sandra Moore and Patricia Shafer of Charlotte Rotary; Ineke Wilson of Huntersville Happy Hour Rotary; and I had an amazing time staying with local Rotarians in their homes. SMILE
A child asked his father, "How were people born?" So his father said, "Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on." The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, "We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now." The child ran back to his father and said, "You lied to me!" His father replied, "No, your mom was talking about her side of the family."
THE BOTTOM LINE

Despite eating an average of 35 pounds of cheese per year, Americans haven't been able to dent a historic dairy glut. Dairy farmers literally poured 50 million gallons of unsold milk into the ground last year, amid the lowest prices since the recession-Bloomberg.com

Americans are expected o spend a record $316 billion on home improvements this year, up from $296 billion in 2016. Many homeowners are electing to stay put and remodel rather than trade up, because the inventory of affordable homes is so small-The Wall Street Journal

The number of tablet computers is expected to decline for the first time ever this year, according to research firm Forrester. Bigger smartphone screens are to blame-Recode.net
