NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
RANDY GIVES "VANNA" THE HEIMLICH
  • Once again, Allen was the 1st of 23 members to arrive. And, just like last week, Sandy, Sherry and Mark1 completed the early vanguard. Paul was so late that he made Rhonda, Dave and Joe look early.
  • Sherry was right. A few weeks back she mentioned that she had just visited the $100 million Ark Encounter biblical theme park in Kentucky and really liked it. Since opening in July, they have had over 400,000 visitors.
  • Randy made an excellent presentation about CPR and the Heimlich maneuver. His presentation was not recorded, but he did share this fact, every minute that CPR is delayed, the person's risk of death increases 10%. The Bee Gees song "Stayin' Alive" has meaning beyond the beats. here's a link to explain that reference https://youtu.be/n5hP4DIBCEE also, thanks to his ace assistant "Vanna" AKA Roger for his superb roll playing.
  • Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. There's no meeting next week. The next Rotary Banner will sent to you on December 3rd.
  • There was some early confusion about the room/food setup. Once everyone found their way to the dessert table, all seem to be well. here's a tip, don't ask Sandy to share her dessert. The buffet line offered BBQ shredded pork, teriyaki chicken chunks, au gratin taters, g-beans, salad and mini pies. Mark1 and Sherry were a bit concerned about the chilly rolls. Where was the bun warmer?
  • Opening duties were provided by Chris2, Allen and Dave.
  • SAA Bill and Bag Lassie Sandy worked the room hard. We did celebrate Rhonda's birthday. The trivia topics included Elizabethan England, The Terminator, Heidi Bowl and the Kingston Trio.
  • Wendell returned from his cruise tanned and mostly rested, but annoyed by all the double wide strollers on the ship.
  • If you find more text errors than usual, my proofreader, Betsy, is out of the country and unavailable to wield the big red pencil.
  • You may be chuckling by the time you read this, but Joe asked "Who needs a place in Florida" with weather like this (83 degrees, a Nov 17th record).
  • Mark3 introduced his vet guest Glen.
  • Bill declared it "yellow shirt day".
  • The container and wish list for the adopted family donations is making the rounds.
  • The Operation Blessing Turkey Fund collected $227. Thanks to all for your generous support.
  • Bill reported that we will need 12-15 folks for the Winter Wonderland gig on December 9th, including a photo friendly Santa. He will provide more details at our December 1st meeting.
  • There are only a couple of open Salvation Army belling ringing slots open. Both of them are on December 22nd at the Wood River Shop 'N Save.
  • The Christmas party sign-up list is now making the rounds. You have a choice of two entrees.
  • Brad1 and Allen pulled the cards for the $11 jackpot. Randy had the scratch off. You know the rest.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

When I give to Rotary, I get so much more back
STEPHANIE (middle) IN SLOVAKIA

By Stephanie Witkowski, Rotary Club of Honolulu Pau Hana

At 28 years old, I decided to become a Rotarian, because Rotary changed my life.

I grew up in a small town in Oregon, USA, and was a young leader in my school. When I was 15 years old, I applied to attend a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards event in Rotary’s District 5110 to learn more about myself and what leadership meant to me. During that amazing week-long experience, I learned not only about how to be a better leader for my school and community, but about Rotary itself.

One of the things I learned about Rotary was the organization’s commitment to international service through the Rotary Youth Exchange program. I had always dreamed of learning about another culture through an international experience with students my age. So when I was 17 years old, I applied to be a Rotary Youth Exchange student. In District 5110, they have a wonderful tradition of selecting the student’s host country for them, and then SURPRISE! In 2005, I was off for a life-changing year in Slovakia.
