MERRY CHRISTMAS ISSUE
DECEMBER 23, 2017
NEWS, NOTES & NONSENSE
Remember, there is NO MEETING next week. See you on January 5th. Have a blessed Christmas and a great start to 2018.
Thursday's program was presented by Ordello Vice President Landry Sorbel. He talked about the partnership with To-Go Delivery to provide restaurant delivery service for metro east restaurants. The video has been posted.
Can we talk? Let's take a moment to thank all the members who were involved with organizing the Salvation Army bell ringing, Christmas Wonderland, delivering flowers and our Christmas party: Mark 2, Lori, Rhonda, Patty and Bill. We had several non-members who assisted with the Wonderland event: Mia, Dennis, Deisy, Brenda, Virginia, Sally and Betsy. Their assistance helped to make the event a grand success. A special thanks to Chris 1 for taking on the roll of Santa. One wag suggested that Mark 3 had enough of that job last year that he decided to get his knee replaced rather than sit on the throne again.
It was nice to have Mark 3 back in the house, still recouping from his knee surgery. (He actually joined us at the Christmas party the previous week.)
Brad 2, Allen, Dick and Mark 1 were in the early vanguard. Chris 1, Brad 1, Nathan and Bill were among the last of 20 members to arrive.
Wendell's celebrating Christmas in Columbia. Lori's in Florida, soon to be joined by Sherry, Mark 1 and Dick. Rod is making his way to Arizona. Safe travels to all.
Even though Lindsey and Rhonda were on vaycay, they both made it to Thursday's meeting, helping to provide Christmas cheer!
Our last lunch of '17 included golden fried chicken, Rotary g-beans, cooked carrots, corn, salad, apple crisp and a cream filled roll. Chris 2 and Sandy would be happy to tell you just how fine our meal was.
Rod made a brief presentation about an international project that several area clubs will be partnering on. We have agreed to contribute $1000 to help fund a project of the NiCE Foundation. On Saturday February 17th volunteers will assemble at the Edwardsville Moose Lodge to assemble thousands of meals that will be sent to children in Nicaragua. Chris 2 is looking for basketball teams for the February 3rd tournament.
Joe promised to bring some pine tar to the next meeting in order to help Bill hold on to the gavel.
SAA Lindsey and Chris 2 collected fines for shameless plugs from Bill, Rhonda, Rick, Lindsey and Sherry. Christmas trivia topics included Sweden, the NBA, and an early Christmas date. She also shared some random Christmas info, such as, it's perfectly OK to use Xmas instead of Christmas, something about the Greeks.
Bill shared some thoughts about the true meaning of Christmas.
Mark 3 and Nathan refused to pull the joker and claim the $89 50-50. Sherry/Sandy took the holiday scratch-off back to work (probably to regift to an employee?)
Opening duties were performed by Paul, Mark 3 and Bill, who expressed deep appreciation for the fried chicken.
That's all from here. Have a fine and dry Christmas weekend.

Durango club brings the power of light
By Joe Williams, Rotary Club of Durango Daybreak, Colorado, USA
Most people in the United States take electricity for granted. Only if a powerful storm hits and it is taken away do we get an understanding of what it is like to depend entirely on the sun for our light.
There is, however, a significant population in the heart of the United States that lives their lives with only the sun to light the way.
The Navajo Nation is large. Our club is located slightly north of the Nation. And so our project began.
It seems a simple thing. The whole setup consists of just one, two, or three hanging lights and a cell phone charger, with a small solar panel to power it. The impact this has on the people living in the home, however, is huge. Our recipients report better health, improved grades, improved finances and generally happier lives.

Elderly recipients report that they fall less when there is light to see where they are going at night. Before receiving the lights, many recipients relied on kerosene lanterns or candles, significantly reducing air quality in the home. to continue reading, link herehttp://bit.ly/2oJWFdW

A frog goes to a fortune teller to find out if he will ever be lucky in love.
The fortune teller reads his palm and tells the frog, "I have good news and I have bad news. Which would you like to hear first?"
The frog asks for the good news first.
The fortune teller says, "You are going to meet the most beautiful girl, who is going to be very interested in you and will want to know all about you. She will want you to open up for her and you will give her your heart."
"That's great!" says the frog. "But what's the bad news?"
"Well, you're going to meet her in Biology class."
On the way there, he tells his driver that looks a bit like him:
"I'm sick of all these conferences. I always say the same things over and over!"
The driver agrees: "You're right. As your driver, I attended all of them, and even though I don't know anything about science, I could give the conference in your place."
"That's a great idea!" says Einstein. "Let's switch places then!"
So they switch clothes and as soon as they arrive, the driver dressed as Einstein goes on stage and starts giving the usual speech, while the real Einstein, dressed as the car driver, attends it.
But in the crowd, there is one scientist who wants to impress everyone and thinks of a very difficult question to ask Einstein, hoping he won't be able to respond. So this guy stands up and interrupts the conference by posing his very difficult question. The whole room goes silent, holding their breath, waiting for the response.
The driver looks at him, dead in the eye, and says :
"Sir, your question is so easy to answer that I'm going to let my driver reply to it for me."
