NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
Illinois Senator Crowe was unable to join us on Thursday. She sent office assistant Hannah Miracle in her stead. She offered office assistance with FOID card delays and unemployment claims. Hannah addressed a variety of topics including opiate problems, workforce training, unemployment fraud, pending energy legislation and fire fighting equipment.
TommieM is now home and continues her road to recovery. See Lori's note from Thursday will details of her recovery provided by son MikeK.
There were 22 members in the house on Thursday. Pre-nooners included DarrenC, SandyS and LoriP.
DarrenC told us that the back to school event sponsored by the police and fire departments has over 130 participants registered for the July 31st event. Personal care products are always welcome.
SherryT was up to her old salad slinging tricks.
Lunch featured freshly fried chicken with a whipped tater/gravy side. Rolls, salad and cookies fleshed out the buffet table.
Bob the chef wants to know if you have any menu suggestions. He works hard to try to come up different buffet items for us. Share your suggestion with Lori, she'll let Bob know. Please don't suggest fried chicken every week or a dessert only menu.
JohnP was happy to announce that his Friday birthday was to be celebrated by the start of the Olympics and the return of Ted Lasso to Apple TV+. He was also hopeful for a Cubs win Thursday evening. Hope is a good thing!
MarkV is ready for his family vacay. Entry tickets for Rocky Mountain National Park are firmly in hand, even some for his brother-in-law.

Birthday greetings go out to CoryG on the 25th, HenryS on the 27th and AlanaY on the 29th.
JoeS is back from his The Villages adventure. He enjoyed the great town square music and trash pick-up.
RodC and BillP were both seen sporting Cardinal red shirts, much to the dismay of JohnP.
SAA Sherry, with an assist from BradP asked five presidential trivia Q's. We got 4 out of 5 correct.
Opening duties performed by DaveA and RodneyD. Not sure who led the 4-Way.

The meager $13 jackpot was allowed to roll by JoeS and SandyS. WendellR went scratching.

DON'T FORGET TO PICK A CARD
We will be assisting the Sleep in Heavenly Peace project the afternoon of August 5th making beds for kids. Put it on your calendar. We start with lunch at Julia's before departing for the workshop which is located on the road to the right of the College Av. Comfort Inn in Alton. You do not have to have any wood working skills to assist, just a willingness to help. Our session will last 2.5-3 hours. Come and help as long as you can.The charity started in 2012 when Twin Falls, Idaho resident Luke Mickelson made a bed for a neighbor boy for Christmas. Out of the leftover wood, Mickelson built a second bed and put it on Facebook. Soon he had multiple requests from folks in need of a bed and others eager to help him build more. 2% to 3% of U.S. children do not have a bed to sleep in, and children and youth services departments will not place a child in a home, even with a relative, without a bed for them. Most of the deliveries are to families headed by single parents, and the beds are for ages 3 to 17.

Food bags fill void left by pandemic

I am on a small boat fully loaded with food bags headed for the people of St. Helene, a small island about two miles long and one mile wide, separated by a canal from the island of Roatan. Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands located off the northern coast of Honduras.
As the waves are striking our boat, my thoughts wander to the approximate 1,000 people in 218 households who are in need of the food we’re delivering. Many of whom have no income because they lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. St. Helene has no roads and no infrastructure. Its people are descendants of African slaves brought by the British to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands who then migrated to Roatan after gaining their freedom in the 1830’s.
Last year they got electricity for the first time. And 14 months ago, as the first part of a Rotary global grant, members completed a fresh water project. Phase two of the grant has been approved.
We landed on a Friday in September 2020 at a dock that was built by grant money and the effort of Rotary members. Our trip could not have happened without funds from the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar (Ontario, Canada) and the Rotary Club of Evergreen (Colorado, USA).
