NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
TOO MANY CHOICES
MarkS announced that the merger proposal will be presented to the Wood River club at their meeting on Monday (the 28th). The effective date would be no earlier than January 1st. Our committee met with Cory after Thursday's meeting to discuss some financial details related to the merger.
How about some good news about a past club president? Kevin Stuby is the new owner of Chubby's Bar & Grill on Broadway in Alton. The pub food is very good. It's clean and quiet. There are picnic table outside. It's cash only. And it has a friendly proprietor. What's not to like?
Dick was sporting some fashion forward footware on Thursday. He recently had toe surgery that requires his wife Carole to provide "driving Miss Daisy" treatment for Dick. It was great having her in the house.
Lunch featured sauced pork on rice, whipped taters w/ brown gravy, Caesar salad, garlic bread and choco-chip cookies "as big as your head", according to Bill.
Alex will be making an in person presentation to East Alton-Wood River students soon. Interviews with Roxana scholarship candidates will be done via Zoom. To date, two of our recently graduated seniors have claimed their scholarship dollars. If you have any projects that could earn our students some credits please let Alex know. While we are on the subject, let's thank Alex for keeping our program on track during these unprecedented times.

What is the longest road in the United States?
I-75
U.S. 20
U.S. 10
I-90
Stretching 3,365 miles, U.S. 20 begins in Boston, Massachusetts, and extends all the way to Newport, Oregon. The coast-to-coast route has held the title of the longest road in the country since 1963. Driving from one end to the other would take you through 12 states and Yellowstone National Park — if you’re considering taking an epic cross-country road trip, plan for about a week, assuming you drive 8-10 hours a day. For much of its route, U.S. 20 runs almost parallel to I-90, which at 3,020 miles is the longest interstate highway in the country. In comparison, Route 66 is 2,448 miles long, and the Pacific Coast Highway stretches for just 665 miles.

SUNRISE AFTER DARK INCREASES DIVERSITY IN LOUISIANA
By Tracey Antee, past president of the Rotary Club of Opelousas Sunrise, Louisiana, USA
During my tenure as club president in 2019-20, I made a goal of starting a satellite club that would meet after regular business hours, hence the name Sunrise after Dark. A young professional group in the community just ended, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to reach out to these individuals and invite them to join Rotary, within the ease provided by the satellite format.
Satellite clubs require fewer initial members to charter, and remain connected to their sponsoring clubs while they remain in this transitional phase toward becoming their own regular club. We were also excited to add their diversity to our membership. Sunrise after Dark ranges in age from 23 to 55 years old. Their inclusion made our collective membership more even in just about every demographic.
Our first satellite club informational meeting had almost 30 participants and we were quickly able to sign up 21 members to receive a charter in November. Establishing the satellite club was a simple process, and we received a lot of support from our District 6200 leaders.
We were able to recruit easily by initially identifying a few people in the community that had a large network and asking them to invite people to the informational meeting. People are more likely to say yes to someone they know and engage with than a stranger. This method of recruiting new members has been very successful.
The satellite club meets bi-monthly, once for a general meeting to listen to a speaker and a second time at a local bar or restaurant for networking. Prior to COVID-19, these networking meetings were well attended and created the opportunity to introduce the club to potential new members. Sunrise after Dark has continued to meet virtually twice a month.
The members of Sunrise after Dark were surprised when we shared our club’s work over the decades. This helped motivate them to join in serving our community in a meaningful way. Using the People of Action materials available through the Brand Center, we showed prospective members how they could take action by joining the club, which made the difference for many of them. We recognized that people were looking for ways to volunteer and be People of Action in their community but didn’t know how. Sunrise After Dark gave them that opportunity.
