NEW (RI) YEAR ISSUE
JULY 3, 2021
VOL. 2 NO. 1
LET'S GET THE PARTY STARTED
NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
Don't forget about the Fireworks over the Mississippi tonight. MikeK suggests that the best way to guarantee that you have a seat to view to fireworks (especially from the balcony) is to bring your own. See you there!
Let's take a moment and recognize recent EA-WR graduate Jayden Ulrich on her being named the Post-Dispatch All-Metro girls track and field athlete of the year. At the recent state track and field tournament she won state titles in shot put and discus, earned All-American honors and set state records in both sports. Wow!
Our program presenter was Jim Koonce, founder and director of the Honor Wreaths for Veterans program. Jim is also the current club president of the Cartervillle, Il Rotary Club. The program began in 2016 by distributing 200 wreaths in the Mound City National Cemetery. In 2020 the program grew to 8000 wreaths distributed to numerous cemeteries, both veteran and civilian. Jim pointed out that virtually every dollar raised goes toward purchasing wreaths.
We had 22 members in the house on
Thursday demonstrating our best mash-up to date.
Happy Rotary anniversary to DebK for her 13 years of service..
Early arrivals included AllenH, BillP and LoriP.
LoriP still has packs of 10 Baseball Mania tickets available. Each ticket sells for $10. Mania later this month.
Birthday greeting to AllenH born on the 4th of July.
RodneyD announced that every Monday in July the Rox Theater will feature a 1PM family friendly film. The event is sponsored by the Roxana Library. Popcorn and water are included.
BradP didn't quite know where to sit after being untethered from his Zoom duties.
Your choice of cream of broccoli or roasted red pepper tomato soup were Thursday's entrees. Rolls, bruschetta, salad, pudding and fruit salad were also available.
We will be assisting the Heavenly Peace project the afternoon of August 5th making beds for kids. Put it on your calendar. We start with lunch at Julia's before departing for the workshop.
PattiA's son has realized that being a foreman has its perks. An extra 800 bucks a month and your own room while on the road.
Prez Lindsey presented RickH with his Paul Harris +3 pin.
It seems as though the trivia questions have gone missing. Instead SAA Sherry asked each table to share a 4th of July tradition. A trip to Bull Shoals, a marriage and unsafe sparklers were among the stories. Not going to the Cracker Factory today? Pay a $.
Opening duties were performed by PaulH, GeorgeT and BillP. We managed to turn the 4-Way Test into some sort of 4-way challenge.
Among the last to arrive were RodneyD, SherryT, PaulH and LeonardB.
JeanK and RickH had no luck finding the joker in the new deck. AllenH may have had more success with the scratch-off.
Ciao! Have a fine and dry 4th of July weekend. Stay safe.
GEORGE TURNS 50!

OATH OF OFFICE
INSTALLATION AND AWARDS DINNER
On June 24th 41 members and guests were on hand, creating a very good room vibe, to witness our very first RbE Installation and Awards Dinner. The highlight of the evening was seeing Lindsey sworn in as our new Prez by multi-time club presidents JohnP and JoeS and listening to her enthusiastic plans for her presidential term. She views the next year as our singular opportunity to establish our club's identity. Lindsey hopes to establish one new service project per quarter and grow our membership to at least 60, from the current 57. She also wants to grow our social media presence. With all our support, who knows just how far our community footprint can reach. Let's get moving!
We also saw a Paul Harris presentation to MarkS and his family in honor of his late wife Sally.
PaulH presented 15 service awards, including one to GeorgeT for his 50 years of club service.
Prez Lindsey and MarkS made a presentation about our merger journey.
Prez Lindsey administered the oath of office to her officers and directors.
And away we go...

Which lake is the deepest in the world?
Crater Lake
Lake Baikal
Lake Ysyk
Lake Tanganyika
At a depth of 5,315 feet, Lake Baikal in Siberia is over a full mile deep. Just north of the border with Mongolia, the lake also holds the distinction of being the world's oldest freshwater lake. Scientists believe it was created between 20 and 25 million years ago. Because of its unique age and geology, the lake is home to some plants and animals that can't be found anywhere else. One example is the Baikal seal, the only seal species in the world to live full-time in a freshwater habitat. To this day, scientists aren't sure how the seals got to Lake Baikal, since it's hundreds of miles inland, far away from the saltwater oceans and seas where seals normally live.

Stopping the spread of
COVID-19 in Bangladesh
By Abdullah Al Fahad, Rotaract Club of Dhaka Orchid, Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, the infection rate from COVID-19 had been increasing daily earlier this year. The death rate was also frighteningly high. It’s a threat to our country’s health and economy. Our population density is simply too high. The best way to decrease the spread of COVID-19 is by using facemasks. Therefore, we felt we needed to work hard as a Rotaract club to remind people of the importance of wearing face masks.
Together with our four sister clubs, we distributed 25,000 facemasks to people in the public areas of Dhaka in April, where people go to work to earn their livelihood. They are vital to our economy and it’s important for us to protect them.
For weeks, we listened as medical experts warned that not enough tests were being conducted. News reports and social media forecasted additional deaths. While some received treatment at COVID-19 isolations centers, others were turned away without even testing for the virus. For a long time, testing was centralized and conducted exclusively by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research in the capital Dhaka, despite the fact that patients with symptoms were reported all over the country. Finally, on 22 March, Bangladesh declared a 10-day shut down effective from 26 March to 4 April, and later extended to 30 May.
Our Rotaract club with our sister clubs have been doing whatever we can to try and protect people from the virus and stop the spread. We encourage other Rotaract clubs to help their communities, by spreading information, encouraging mask usage where it is necessary, and working for the distribution of vaccines.
We can stop this virus just as we have been working to eradicate polio from the world. We are the people with the experience, determination, and dedication to do this.
