              NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
  • Let's take a moment to thank all our mothers for what you have done, and continue to do, to make your children and, by extension, your family, the best it can possibly be.
  • On Thursday RandyN introduced Mallory Jones, Assistant Director of the YWCA Child Enrichment Program. Mallory gave us a brief overview of all the programs offered at the Y and did a deeper dive into the program she helps coordinate. The Child Enrichment Program serves three area school districts at four locations. During the school year the program focus is on before-school programs starting at 6:30 AM. During school breaks and the summer months full day programs are available. She pointed out that the fully trained and certified staff offer a comprehensive educational opportunity to the program participants. .
  • Thursday's head count showed 25 members in the house and one Zoomie.
  • Time to push our Virtual Color Run. It's less than one month away.  Adults are $30, kids are $25. Sponsorships are available from $100 to $500.The event is scheduled for the June 4-6 weekend. It's time to start promoting this great event via social media and word of mouth. Here's the link to sign up https://bit.ly/3kOlgrp
  • Early arrivals included DarrenC, BradP, RandyN and LoriP.
  • Prez Chris returned from his undisclosed location  the previous Thursday to bring the room to order.
  • A Cinco de Mayo (+ 1) feast was featured on Thursday. Muy bueno!
  • Congrats to CherylM on her eight years of Rotary service.
  • Opening duties were provided by CoryG, RickH and a communal "Big Amen"!
  • LeonardB offered a suggestion regarding a yet to be designed club mini-banner. He thought including Lewis & Clark into the design would be a good idea, especially, as JoeS pointed out, Lewis was from Wood River and Clark was from East Alton.
  • PattiA and JoeS spent a few minutes comparing  notes on adult children.
  • GeorgeT gave a shout out to National Prayer Day and his vintage WR polo shirt as part of National Relic Day.
  • BradP would like your feedback on the need to continue Zooming our meetings. You can reach out to him with your thoughts and suggestions-bp5602@sbcglobal.net
  • It would appear that literature is our trivia achilles heel. Prez Chris and RandyN collected a bunch of $$ when we missed 3 out of 5 Q's. Thank goodness for Homer and Harry.
  • Post-nooners included a whole bunch of surnamed "H's"-Chris, Allen, Lindsey and Paul along with DaveA.
  • LoriP still has lots of packs of 10 Baseball Mania tickets available. Each ticket sells for $10. Complete the bottom of each ticket and return with  payment to her. We keep 65% of each ticket sold. The contest begins in July and runs 10 weeks. There are 35 weekly winners, from $10 to $250. If you win, look for a check in the mail.
  • Catching up with last week's 50-50 winners Prez Chris had ChrisH and RandyN (pulling for the absent MarkA). No winner. Under the title of what's new? TommieM had two of her tickets pulled. GeorgeT pulled the other one. The jackpot rolls.

Where is the world's tallest clock tower?
Dubai, UAE
London, England
Mecca, Saudi Arabia
Toronto, Canada

It’s easy to tell time in Mecca — just look up at the Makkah Royal Clock Tower. Located near the Grand Mosque, it is the world’s tallest clock tower at 1,972 feet. (Thought Big Ben was tall? It stands at a mere 315 feet.)  The tower itself is the world’s third-tallest building. The four massive clock faces on the exterior are the largest in the world — illuminated at night, they can be seen for up to 16 miles in any direction.

DATELINE:RI
The Rotary Foundation is giving a significant boost to the fight against malaria in Zambia with a new $2 million Programs of Scale grant that will scale an already successful program model. Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia is a Rotarian-led effort that will use a community health worker model proven to effectively respond to cases of malaria and prevent transmission. The program aims to help reduce malaria cases over time by 90% in 10 target districts in two of the country’s provinces.
Malaria, a preventable disease caused by a parasite spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes, continues to be one of Zambia’s leading causes of illness and death, especially infant and maternal deaths.
The grant will allow Partners for a Malaria-Free Zambia to strengthen the country’s health system by working with Zambian health officials at all levels and training 380 health facility staff members, as well as training and equipping more than 2,500 new community health workers. This will increase access to malaria diagnosis and treatment for the more than 1.3 million people in heavily affected areas in the Central and Muchinga provinces and greatly contribute to the national effort to eliminate the deadly disease.
