NEWS NOTES & NONSENSE
IT'S ALL UPHILL!
Darren presented his classification talk this past Thursday. He has been married to his wonderful wife Robin for 36 years and they haver six children. Did I mention that Robin is his wonderful wife? ( If you know her, you would agree.) Darren's a local guy who graduated from EA-WR High School. He also attended LCCC, Concordia College, the FBI Academy and University of Phoenix. He began his police department career with the Brighton PD in 1981. He also worked with the Bunker Hill Police Department before joining the East Alton PD. He retired from East Alton in 2007 as the Chief of Police and spent seven years running the Criminal Justice program at LCCC. When good friend Joe was elected Mayor, Darren returned to serve another tour as Chief. He plans to be around as long as Joe is Mayor, or until age 65. He especially loves interacting with the citizens of the village.
District Governor Brian makes his pilgrimage to our club this coming Thursday. Good attendance and East Alton hospitality are in order.
It seems as though a youthful Darren was unable to make it up the Berkshire hill and a young hill dweller, Allen, would not cross the railroad tracks by the lumber yard. Then there was the youthful BradL who loved to hop the northbound freighter to Brighton. They all agreed that when they cut lawns to make a few $$ all the yards seem to run uphill!
Prez Patty circulated a thank you from former member Rose Sebastian thanking us for our memorial donation in honor of her long time spouse Doug.
The sign-up sheet for the Soap Box Race is making the rounds. The date is September 8th.
Prez Patty got Acting SAA ChrisL all wound up by pimping with the line "princess for a day". Queenie needs to get a handle on this! Chris drafted Paul to collect the $. Not here last week? Pay a $. Not involved with accounting? Pay a $. Patty and MarkS had announcements. The trivia topics included the Liberty Bell, Mount St. Helens, the Superbowl and answering machines.
Allen, Virgil (1st official day of retirement), Darren and Lori were the early birds amongst the late arriving crowd. Last of the 17 members to arrive were ChrisL, Patty, Paul and Rhonda.
The entree was a fish fillet shaped hush puppy. It was accompanied by fries, rotary g-beans, corn topped with some sort of red flakes (help me here), cornbread, salad, red cake and a cooling citrus whip.
We welcomed two visiting Rotarians, Gary from Bethalto and Pat from Wood River. Gary made a pitch about his clubs current raffle. Pat was chatting about her Busey bucks.
Can you believe than Wendell has never been to Key West? That visit will soon be off his bucket list, just as soon as he lays a wreath at Castro's tomb.
Congrats to Cory on being made a principal at Scheffel Boyle.
Virgil celebrates his 11th year as a club member on the 30th.
For the second week in a row Bill took 2/3 of the 50-50 opportunities (what are the odds of that?) MarkS took the other 1/3. The $29 jackpot rolls.
That's all from here, have a fine and dry weekend.

Origins: pretzel-There is no proof that pretzels are twisted to represent "the folded arms of praying children," as is often claimed, and they certainly don't take their name from the latin pretiola, "little reward," because they were given by monks to religiously faithful children. Why they are twisted, no one really knows, and the word pretzel, first recorded in 1824, is a reference to pretzels eaten by the Dutch, derives from the German word for "branch," in reference to the branches of a tree that the "arms" of the pretzel resemble.

WHY YOU SHOULDN'T BE AFRAID TO TAKE RISKS
By Daniel Vankov, Immediate Past President, Rotary Club of Brisbane, Australia
Rotary’s secret is cooperation. Alone we are useless. Together we are powerful. And together in a million we are unstoppable. I had the honor of serving as president of the Rotary Club of Brisbane in 2017-18. It was a task that was not only challenging, but highly rewarding. My desire had been to make a difference, which also happened to be the theme 2017-18 Rotary President Ian Riseley put forward for the year. Reflecting back, I realize that at that point of time, I was unprepared in many ways for the enormity of it, given my limited exposure to both Rotary and the club. But I embraced the opportunity I was given with a passion and desire to learn and grow as a person and as a Rotarian. And I had many great former presidents to learn from.
One thing in particular I learned, and it would be my advice to those that follow, is to take risks. To continue reading, link herehttps://bit.ly/2w7ovlN
