NEWS NOTES & NONSENSE
  • This week's program was presented by David Benke, a representative of All American Bingo. They are providing the expertise/equipment for our Cosmic Bingo event. His presentation will give you a good idea of what to expect at the event.
  • The September 19th bulletin was opened by 63% of club members. A positive trend! The next newsletter may not be until October 10th. (If you don't receive a newsletter on October 3, then look for it on the following Saturday.)
  • The meal included brats (possibly Italian sausage), BBQ shredded pork, baked beans, mac 'n cheese, salad and custard.
  • We had 18 members in the house. Counting themselves as early arrivals were Roger, Allen and Mark 1. Brad L, Paul, Chris and Fred all made it before the bell was struck
  • Wendell wanted to know who shuffled the name badges?
  • The opening duties were performed admirably by Allen, Sherry and Bill, who was thankful that Allen could remember the pledge.
  • Bill recruited Sandy as his 'lugmeister' and went about "fleecing the flock". He received a rendition of the birthday song. Here are some of the correct answers:Supreme Court, frogs, Dodgers,The Monkees (not the DC5), Francis and elves. Lori's table were all about "The Natural".
  • How come Sherry is the only person (or so it seems) that has sold winning Mania tickets? There are two more weeks left in the program. Good luck!
  • Lori surprised everyone by stuffing her hot dog bun with pulled pork.
  • Sherry pointed out that there is a big difference between, BBQ, beans and salad. They shall not meet on her plate.
  • We had two visiting Rotarians, both from Wood River. "Uncle" Leonard and Jean. Leonard recently made-up at the Central London club. he reported that this club has some serious 'big fish' for members. Jean was promoting the clubs cash raffle (as well as Cosmic Bingo).
  • It seems as though at least one members contact list has been hijacked. Be wary of odd looking emails and don't open any suspicious links.
  • Off to the links after the meeting were "gentleman golfer" Rod, Paul, MIA Joe and Mark 1.
  • Photos and a photo book from the 2014-15 Rotary year were circulating. They will make a return appearance.
  • Paul really liked the dessert, he just wasn't sure what it was.
  • Roger reported that additional tickets and flyers for the Chili Supper are still available.
  • The Christmas party will be held on December 3rd. Patty and Rhonda are working on the where.
  • Roger was surprised to learn that there were members of the foundation board in the house.
  • Roger offered a standing O for Rick (thanks!)
  • Sherry quit tossing her salad, she is now dropping it.Yikes!
  • The $22 50-50 jackpot was left on the table by Brad P, Fred and Sherry.
  • That's all from here. Have a fine and dry weekend.

FROM THE ARCHIVES

  • Matt Maberry was our President. Current club members serving as club officers include:Paul, Allen and Rick
  • The joke/pun program was off to a slow start. If you told a joke, whoever thought it was funny threw some $ in the fine bucket. If it was not funny, the joke teller would be fined. (No wonder it was confusing.)
  • Fines were levied for not know the answer to a '50's trivia question about raccoons, being late, and not submitting names of potential members.
  • Charlie reported that the new scholarship program has been reviewed with the counselors at both schools. He was also looking for help with interviews.
  • Dick received his Paul Harris Award hardware. He also won the 50-50 jackpot.
  • We were going to host a new member social on  Oct. 23rd at the Westerner Club.
  • The program was presented bt Doug Arnold, Director of the Alton/Twin Rivers Tourism and Convention bureau.
  • Next week's program was would be presented by the Alton Museum of History and Art.
  • The next board meeting would be held on October 7th at the Moonlight. The Operation Blessing roadblock would take place on October 25. The Halloween parade on October 30th.

A SIMPLE IDEA BENEFITS MANY IN MEXICO

By Jon Kaufman

From 2 to 8 July, I led my club’s second H2OpenDoors expedition to central Mexico. The three-year-old Rotary project provides SunSpring water purification systems for poor villages and schools and allows the villages to sell the surplus water from the systems.

The project touches on several of Rotary’s areas of focus: providing clean water, building peace (by combating poverty), and educating youth.

We bring along a dozen or so students, as well as a few teachers, so they can see how a simple idea can become a project and benefit thousands of people. We hope the students return to their schools empowered to make a difference.

Presidential visit

Last year, we were able to visit with former Mexican President Vicente Fox, who pledged to partner with us on future efforts.

This year’s trip included 24 Rotary members, friends, family, students, and teachers. We installed a solar-powered SunSpring water purification system in San Miguel de Allende. The plant will bottle water into 10-liter reusable jugs and sell it to the public at a third the cost of other water. Even so, it will raise close to $200,000 a year for CRISMA, a rehabilitation center for disabled children and adults with cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. Fox and his wife support the center through their foundation.

The implications of this project are huge. All over the developing world, social services like these close for lack of funding or government support. At CRISMA, mothers and their disabled children travel for up to three days by bus for therapy sessions vital to the children’s growth and recovery.

A thirst for change

Mexico is the world’s No. 1 consumer, per capita, of bottled water. The vast majority of sales are by four multinational companies. By launching a new water-bottling enterprise whose sole purpose is to support services for the poor, we our creating a model others can follow.

During our trip, students spent time painting, planting, and helping with aqua-therapy classes. One of our teachers noted that the trip was a once-in-a lifetime experience. We spent the final three days of the six-day trip at Centro Fox, the presidential library and international conference center named for the former president. Fox told us he enjoyed hosting the students as an opportunity to help them develop a purpose in life and learn leadership skills

My day job is running KL&P Marketing in San Carlos, California, and our largest client, AT&T, is running a college promotional campaign that will raise $100,000 for H2OpenDoors. When the campaign ends in October, 10 college students from all over the country will be chosen to join a team to install water systems at two villages in Guanajuato State in central Mexico. We also have expeditions planned for Nepal, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Cuba.
