DG IN THE HOUSE ISSUE

NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
DG MAURA PRESENTS LORI HER PHF + PIN
District Governor Maura Donnelly (and Highland Rotarian since 2006) was in the house to share her vision for the pandemic influenced Rotary year. She urged us to think outside the box when it comes to adding members during her Power Point presentation. RI provides a template for at least six types of non-traditional clubs. Creative fundraising and service projects are items that she urged us to think about. At least one district club is hosting a virtual trivia night. If you are on Facebook, Maura wants you to find and follow the district 6460 page.
Birthday wishes to Bill on the 15th!
Lunch featured pulled pork w/ sauce, jumbo seasoned curly fries, corn, salad, and two types of cake.
Prior to the regular meeting DG Maura pow-wowed with board members Prez Chris, Lori, Rod, Paul, Rhonda and Alex via Zoom.
Rhonda indicated that the November trivia night will probably not happen. The question is how to handle the 10 $100 gift certificates that we purchased from local merchants?
Can we pick up some trash as a safe outdoor service project?
DG Maura presented Paul Harris Fellow plus awards to Lori and Rick.
14 members dined in person and two Zoomies.
Brad P will be providing a Zoom link for all September meetings.
Lori has Football Mania tickets. Winning opportunities begin on October 29th.
Alex is moving ahead with scholarship interviews using Zoom. East Alton-Wood River students are first up. Roxana students to follow.
The merger committee had their first confab after the meeting. And away we go...??
Sherry served as the alternate SAA and recruited Sandy to serve as the lugmeister. We "sang" the birthday song to Rod in honor of his 79th! We correctly answered questions about Harry Potter, Donald Duck and language. We wiffed on one about bones, in your body, not the TV show.
Opening duties were performed by Paul, MarkV and Bill, who asked us to remember the anniversary of 9-11 on Friday.
The $5 jackpot was refused by Lori and Allen. Sherry won the scratch-off.
Have a fine and dry weekend and stay safe. Ciao!

Which of these U.S. cities was named after an ancient Egyptian capital?
Memphis
Tucson
Omaha
Anaheim
The fact that Memphis, Tennessee, shares a name with the ancient capital of Egypt is no coincidence. Before he was president, general Andrew Jackson was one of the three people who founded the city in 1819 and coined the name based on its geography. Memphis was the ancient capital of Egypt because of its prominent location on the Nile River Delta. Its American counterpart was also located on the delta of an important river — the Mississippi, which was sometimes referred to as “the American Nile.”

NO USE CRYING OVER SPILLED MILK
8
By Martin Cohn, past president of the Rotary Club of Brattleboro, Vermont, USA
In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vermont dairy farmers were in trouble. With the close of colleges and restaurants, there was too much supply of milk. This excess was headed to be spilled into mudholes. At the same time, the need to help food-insecure families was increasing. How could food that was being wasted reach people who needed food?
That’s when I heard about a project where the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets was coordinating an effort to recover raw milk from being disposed of while creating a new, temporary food supply for Vermont Foodbank. In collaboration with the Vermont Community Foundation, $60,000 was made available to purchase this milk for the benefit of Vermonters. These efforts were particularly important as Vermont’s dairy industry, like all sectors, had been challenged by COVID-19 but remain essential to the state’s food supply. However, more money was needed.
When I heard about the need, I sprang into action. I sent out emails to fellow Rotarians and within days an additional $10,500 was raised. These monies came from eight Rotary clubs, a donation from the District 7870’s Youth Exchange, and the District 7850 Foundation. This helped cover the cost of 32,000 gallons of milk, ingredients, and processing to create 48,000 cups of Green Mountain Yogurt, 11,500 gallons of Hood Dairy 2% Milk, and 440 pounds of Ploughgate Creamery butter.
