        NEWS-NOTES-NONSENSE
  • On Thursday we had the pleasure of hearing from playwright Gene Baldwin. He joined us to talk about his involvement with the book "A Black Soldier's Letters Home". It's a compilation of Alton native Jim Killian Jr.'s letters that he sent to his mother during WWII. Gene served as the books co-editor. He also shared a brief history of segregation/racism in the U.S. military. Suffice it to say, it's not a proud piece of our history.   • Our Christmas party is slated for December 21st. We need a host. Might that be you?? If you are interested let Prez Rodney or LoriP know, ASAP.
  • As LoriP pointed out in her recent email, our Baseball Mania event fared much better than the Redbirds season. The total payout were $445. Congrats to all the winners. Thanks to Lori for serving as the coordinator and to everyone who sold/purchased tickets. 
  • Early arrivals included Prez Rodney, RodC and MarkA.
  • The slide right in crew was well represented on Thursday-WendellR, DaveA, MarkSm, CoryG,  ChrisH, MIkeK, BradP, GeorgeM and TylerL. 
  • The Turkey Fund jar, yes, we now have a customized jar, thanks to LoriP, will begin circulating next Thursday. All donations will be given to our friends at Operation Blessing. Checks should be made payable to Operation Blessing. If you prefer to donate via Venmo send your donation to RickH @john-hooks7 and he will convert it to cash. Thanks for your past generous support.
  • It was nice seeing Chef Bob make a cameo appearance.
  • JoeS wasn't sure if Lionel Messi or Taylor Swift would boost sporting event attendance more.
  • Our Chili Supper will be held next Friday, October 13th @ RHS.  You may bring your desserts next Thursday or drop them by MarkSm's office on Friday AM. In case you were wondering, the chili will be made by the Airliner Bar and Grill with Boss Lady SherryT providing kitchen oversight.
  • Birthday greetings go out to MarioS on the 10th.
  • Ask SandyS about her salad sweetener
  • Happy Fines were paid by BillP, covid recovery and birthday and TylerL, RHS outstanding football season (#5 in the state).
  • Opening duties were skillfully handled by JoeS, CoryG and MarkV.
  • JoeS found out that three cheesecake bites only constitute a half-serving.
  • According to BillP all handsome men wear red. JoeS questioned that bit of wisdom.
  • 22 members were in the house to sample Chef Bob's mostaccioli, mexicorn, rolls, salad and cheezecake bites.
  • SAA Patti posed 4 sports related questions. We nailed 3 correctly. Since BillP announced that he had a recent birthday we tried to sing the birthday song. Once again, it was another huge fail.
  • Last in included  TylerL, GeorgeM, BradP and JohnP. 
  • There are now 11 cards left after LoriP (2nd week in a row) and MarkSm failed to find the joker. SandyS  received the scratchie.

Though the ubiquitous condiment is typically made from tomato, ketchup in Filipino grocery stores often tastes a little different. It's said that when U.S. soldiers stationed in the Philippines brought ketchup to the country, the nation loved it, but there weren't enough domestically-grown tomatoes to produce it. So a more prevalent local fruit was used instead: bananas. Once sugar, vinegar, and spices are added to pureed banana, the sauce goes brown, but red food coloring is added so it more closely resembles tomato ketchup. It's sweeter than regular ketchup, and can be found alongside dishes such as tortillas, fried rice, and sticky chicken wings.

  • Congrats were offered to George and Teresa Moore on their October 20th wedding anniversary.
  • The EA club would be installing insulation in the Habitat build in Bethalto.
  • JeanK and DonnaK were heading to to the District Conference to sell Rotary Raffle tix.
  • The Chili Dinner sign-up sheet was circulating at the EA meeting.
  • CherylM paid a Happy Fine.
  • PattyW confirmed that the. EA Christmas party would be held at High Flyers Grill on December 3rd.
  • MikeK introduced the WR visitors.
  • Shameless plugs were offered by MarkA and PattyW at the EA meeting.
  • The Wood River Women's Club was recognized for 100 years of service.
  • MarkA and PatB missed the opportunity to claim the $27 jackpot.

DISTRICT YOUTH EXCHANGE UPDATE 
The Youth Exchange 2022-23 year culminated in mid-July with the annual Central States Rotary Youth Exchange Summer Conference, on the campus of Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
All were excited about reuniting. This was the first time for the Central States Rotary Youth Exchange (CSRYE) conference since July 2019.
Rotary International youth exchange programs were on a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.
What makes the program's recent regional conference so special is all of the attendees from CSRYE’s 20 districts, including:
District leadership
Youth Exchange volunteers
Inbound students about to return home
Outbound students about to begin their adventures abroad
Rebound students who recently returned home
Youth exchange alumni (ROTEX)
This summer we said a fond farewell to our district’s 2022-23 inbound students:
